How many Republican scandals are currently in the air?
I need help working up a list of current Republican scandals. When you type that into Google you do not get a current list. I am looking for descriptive, accurate, yet judicious terms. In some cases the media has bestowed a name--like Plamegate. I'd like to use the terms with the broadest currency and describe the subject in relatively neutral terms. There will be other columns to get into detail. Also, links to reputable news sources will be included. Any input would be appreciated. Here's a starter list.

Name/Subject
Plamegate: Disclosure of identity of CIA agent
Abu Grahib: Abuse of prisoners
Torture Cover Up: PR campaign denying systematic prisoner abuse
Torture Memos: Untenable legal opinions to justify torture and unlimited Presidential power
Torture: Systematic prisoner abuse sometimes rising to torture
Memogate: Hacking of confidential computer files
Medicare Reform: Withholding legally required information from Congress
Terrorism Report: Falsifying official government statistics
Energy Task Force: Claim of Executive Privilege
Enemy Combatants: Suspension of constitutional rights
Washingtonienne: Sex
Haliburton: No-bid contracts, overcharging
Gov. of Con: Corruption, Lying
Rep. Janklow: Fatal traffic accident
Duck Hunting trip: Improper influence on the judiciary

1. I'd say Janklow is over.
And it's not really a Republican scandal. The guy committed a crime, went to jail, served his time... it has as little to do with the GOP as the Condit and Traficant scandals have to do with the Democratic party.

3. I thought about that.

It's still in the ballpark, I think. I was going to notate it "currently serving sentence."

If I can add a few more to the list, I'll drop that one.

On edit: Yes, it's a non-partisan crime. Maybe I should drop it on principle.

2. Contempt of Congress
by the AG for refusing to turn over memoranda about the new legality of torture to Congress and refusing to answer whether or not the president made a directive regarding torture.

Write you congressmen today and this scandal will be the next on on your list.

It's listed as "Torture Memos." Is the media using a different term?

6. On medicare reform
A Senator/House member (forgot which & for what state - help me here) who was told if he didn't vote for the bill a large amount of campaign money would be withheld from a political campaign (again - forgot what for) would be withheld.

Also - someone involved in the cost calculations was told he'd be fired if he revealed the TRUE cost of the program.

Of course, the deal with the members of the saudi royal family today.

18. Also illegally using taxpayers' money for propaganda purposes.
"The Bush administration violated anti-propaganda law when it distributed videos to news stations earlier this year about the newly passed Medicare prescription drug law, the General Accounting Office said Wednesday."

8. More

Scalia -
Illegal confiscation of reporters tape recorders. Direct violation of the first amendment. Presuming to act like a dictator.

If we get some majorities, we can impeach him for these actions.

Jeb Bush/Katherine Harris -
The systematic and intentional voter disenfranchisement in 2000 and 2002.

14. Thanks. Scalia needs to be included,
but I think I'll resolve it with "apology". It's really hard to impeach a sitting justice.

I think I would put Florida disenfranchisement in the 2004 column with a backward reference.

26. As hard as impeaching a president ...

Honestly, I think the "Bush 5" should all be removed. But Scalia's willfull violation of the 1st amendment is a "high crime" for a Sumpreme Court Justice.

How can we trust this man to uphold freedom of speech when he so flagrantly violates it personally????? How can we trust a man who REFUSES to let his words be known outside of a select group?????

Nope, we can get Scalia for this. IMPEACH!!!!!!

9. some more
Thank you for doing this and please let us know where this information is posted. It would be good not only to list them but to also indicate what the status is (resolved, under investigation, or swept under the rug)

The improper movement of Afganistan funds was for 700,000,000.

Also don't forget:

Bribery of congressman for Medicare vote

Showing of secret war plan to prince Bandahr

Iraq: Niger uranium falsehood

Sibel Edmonds story. Hot information quashed by Justice Dept

Harken insider trading(Bush)

Halliburton insider trading (Cheney)

Refusing to provide congress with missing 2000 pages of Taguba

Only forwarding 1/3 of Clinton documents to 9/11 Commission

Failing to respond to August 2001 pdb (OBL Determined to Strike)

I'm sure there are many more, and your listing will help us and others remember the huge number of problems this administration has.

16. Thanks.
I've got Enron under Energy Task Force already. I think sealing the presidential papers is an "item of concern" but I'm not sure it's really unconstitutional. I've got the Guantanamo already under torture, but perhaps there are multiple considerations.

21. More about Enron.
"Bush administration officials acknowledged last year that then-Enron chairman Kenneth Lay gave White House personnel adviser Clay Johnson a list of recommendations for energy commission appointments. Lay also clashed with commission Chairman Curtis Hebert Jr., who was nudged into resigning last year.

. . .

White House spokeswoman Anne Womack says Lay recommended seven people, including Patrick Wood III, a Texas utility regulator, and Nora Mead Brownell, a Pennsylvania regulator. Bush named both to the energy commission last year."

15. You've got some great suggestions.
I think I can start a different page with "items of concern." I'm trying to start with things that can get jail time.

I don't know how I could forget Chalabi. My grief for Ronald Reagan must have just pushed it right out of my mind.

I couldn't fit all of the information into the post, but there will lot's of other information as well, including status and chief suspects.

The August 11 PDB given to the 9/11 commission was missing NINE pages!!!!!!

Conspiracy to commit securities fraud - The Veeps "Energy task force" included MANY Enronites. You just GUESS what they were talking about. Those Enron tapes may be what ultimately SINKS the Cheney!!!!!

22. Political briefings by Rove to managers at cabinet departments.
From the 30 July 2003 Issue of the Wall Street Journal

Oregon Water Saga Illuminates Rove's Methods With Agencies
TOM HAMBURGER
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
July 30, 2003

WASHINGTON -- In a darkened conference room, White House political strategist Karl Rove was making an unusual address to 50 top managers at the U.S. Interior Department. Flashing color slides, he spoke of poll results, critical constituencies -- and water levels in the Klamath River basin.

. . .

Though Mr. Rove's clout within the administration often is celebrated, this episode offers a rare window into how he works behind the scenes to get things done. One of them is with periodic visits to cabinet departments. Over the past two years Mr. Rove or his top aide, Kenneth Mehlman -- now manager of Mr. Bush's re-election campaign -- have visited nearly every agency to outline White House campaign priorities, review polling data and, on occasion, call attention to tight House, Senate and gubernatorial races that could be affected by regulatory action.

31. Republican scandals
What about the one where a document from the DNC became public expressing their delight in the poor shape of the economy and their hopes things will continue to get worse so it would help Dems in the election. I think they were investigating who disclosed the private correspondence. Could it have been Republicans? Try Win-at-all-cost-gate.
