Urgent Request. Refuting someone. Need links to conservatives critical
of Bush war in Iraq. Not necessarily the war itself as much as the implementation, lies, etc.

Of course, if you do have something that is also critical of the whole war idea from conservative author...that is even better.

But I really need to refute someone I'm dealing with who's claiming "real Americans" are not critical of Bush about the war.

Anyone?

Your help is appreciated.

1. Senate hearings on Iraq resolution
I don't have links, but there were plenty of multi-starred generals stating their opposition to many elements they considered critical. Probably will find transcripts on senate website archive.

2. William Kristol recently criticized the way the war was handled
and so did Richard Perle of all people... Kristol said something on The John Stewart show the other day and Perle made his remarks within the last 2 months or so. Robert Novak did was not gung ho about the war and criticized the chicken hawks. Pat Buchannan was critical of it as well. Those are a few that i can think of.

3. I googled "conservatives against Iraq war" and
found the following:

Conservatives Reject War Against Iraq
by John J. Duncan, Jr. U.S. Congress Member (R-TN)

Most people do not realize how many conservatives are against going to war in Iraq. A strong majority of nationally-syndicated conservative columnists have come out against this war. Just three of many examples I could give include the following:

Charley Reese, a staunch conservative, who was selected a couple of years ago as the favorite columnist of C-SPAN viewers, wrote that a U.S. attack on Iraq "is a prescription for the decline and fall of the American empire. Overextension--urged on by a bunch of rabid intellectuals who wouldn't know one end of a gun from another--has doomed many an empire. Just let the United States try to occupy the Middle East, which will be the practical result of a war against Iraq, and Americans will be bled dry by the costs in both blood and treasure."

4. First, tell your friend he's a nationalist idiot
Then mention Dick Armey and Don Nickles, for starters.

"If we try to act against Saddam Hussein, as obnoxious as he is, without proper provocation, we will not have the support of other nation states who might do so," Armey told reporters in Des Moines during a campaign swing for a House candidate.

"I don't believe that America will justifiably make an unprovoked attack on another nation," Armey said. "It would not be consistent with what we have been as a nation or what we should be as a nation."

5. Hope these help
The American Conservative Magazine. Totally opposed Pat Buchanan, one of its editors.

An Edsel, Not an Empire (an article from the above mag)
"Which brings me to the Bush presidency: it looks like an Edsel—brilliant presentation followed by total failure. But it’s doing its best to cover up the mess. As Patrick Foy wrote in his newsletter, “Call it what you will, but Washington is hitting the wall in Iraq.” If only those Fifth Columnists who advised George W. Bush to go in head first would read history rather than policy papers"

6. thanks a lot!
I juxtaposed the Duncan speech about why conservatives oppose a war in Iraq with his later speech in 2004 saying he supports troops and hopes things are successful in handover...but recalls his opposition on the grounds of wrong mission at wrong time and a waste of our country's resources.

I will post the others too.

THANKS!

8. conservatives critical
There are tons of them. Luckily we are a country with heart. You will likely find as much opposition to the War on terror as you will if you research opposition to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World War II. There is never a lack of people opposed to making the ultimate sacrifice for political ideals.

I would contend that "Real Americans" will ALWAYS and must Always be critical of any War costing lives and resources. "Real Americans" will also be able to see that sometimes the ends justify the means. America did not get where it is and have what it has to offer by being afraid to stand up for what is right. Now whether the War on Terror is right is for individual "real Americans" to decide. But, they darn well better be critical or risk a Nazi party some day.

What do they mean by "not critical of the war" anyway? If the Pres asked for 100 Trillion dollars and the authority to Nuke Iraq, pave it and put in a Disney World when the dust clears, would they support and not be critical of that? The better question is not if they without criticism or opinion but if they support the overall strategy. Certainly there must be some aspects of the war that they disagree with such as Strategy, prisoner treatment, cost etc. War is after all the most chaotic and difficult international affair to conduct. After all, there is not a single one in history that people think went perfectly. From day one, prisoners have been abused, innocents have been killed, and things that can never be replaced have been destroyed. Even so, there are many wars that most agree were absolutely necessary in hind site.
