Anybody see Tweety and Fineman spinning tonight?
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 09:47 PM by Miss_Bevey
Talking about the Republican convention, and the Reagan video they're going to show and about how the convention theme will be "Win one for the Gipper". But we all knew this was coming, didn't we?

Anybody think the Gipper theme will backfire? I'm predicting major RR fatigue by the time September rolls around.

2. Get used to it.
That horse is going to be ridden for as long as possible. He hasn't been in the public eye in more than a dozen years but the saddle has been ready for the duration. With the wall to wall coverage they are getting, can you blame them?

3. I think it will energize "the base", but that won't be enough
The left and the moderates are already rallying against W. Flashing pictures of Raygun on the TV won't help the repukes -- the leftists will be repulsed and further energized to vote against GOP/W, and the moderates will see it as a shameless abuse of Raygun's image. It could well cause voters who'd planned to abstain on the presidential ballot to turn out a vote against shrub.

I think the net effect will be small.

4. They're overplaying their hand
One of the least admirable characteristics of the current batch of Republicans is their excesses. There is never enough of a good thing. If tax breaks were good, then more is better. If a little outsourcing is okay, then more is better. If they gain a little public acceptance for something, then do it again, only BIGGER.

<sigh>

I thought the adults were supposed to be running the country.

5. If we spin it the way the GOP spun Wellstone's memorial
they'll lose.

10. Don't you remember the GOP spin of the Wellstone memorial
where Democrats were all made out to be horrible people because we were sad about Paul Wellstone dying 10 days before the election?

12. Wellstone died while running for his Senate seat.
And the Republicans had a shit fit that the race was mentioned at his memorial service. It offended their high minded sensibilites I guess.

Now Ronald Reagan's death is going to be used to prop up a sagging Republican campaign, 20 years after he last ran for any office and we are just supposed to sob along with them ? I think not.

13. Re GOP spinnig Wellstone.
Since the seat was lost does it make sense TO spin it the way the GOP did?

15. I got confused too...
"If we spin it the way the GOP spun Wellstone's memorial they'll lose." Is what you wrote first and I did not understand. Basically, I am not sure what is the right strategy. Repubs will celebrate Raygun, Demos will attach the celebration, gut feeling is a Dem attack will be a losing proposition. I think what JFK is doing this week is really smart and gracious appearing. I think best idea is to let this storm blow over, ignore it and go after Shrub. Reagan always won, best to leave him to history.

Hope that helps.

16. If you are saying that if the Republicans
try to use Reagan's death to prop up Bush it won't work, I agree with you. But they are going to loose in either case, but I bet Karl won't be able to resist trying.

18. The GOP chose to spin Wellstone's death into "political outrage"
We just need to show all of the phony outrage the GOP did--and more--at the over-the-top the Reagan stuff.

Or is there a link to something I missed? I would love for that to be their theme.

17. They Actually Said That the GOP Convention
would have a movie entitled "Reagan" which would be introduced by Nancy - and said that if Reagan was still living they couldn't do that but since he is dead, it is okay to do.
