How Like a Republican
In keeping with the mean-spirited tradition of Reagan's social policies, the Republicans have decided not to allow any Democrats to speak at his funeral. Not Clinton, not Carter, not Daschle, not Mondale. They want to preserve the 100%-partisan character of the event.

It's just so like them, isn't it? Although Clinton gave a generous eulogy for the undeserving Richard Nixon, Republicans can't risk the possibility that he might upstage George Bush. Listen, there's an election going on! Letting Clinton speak might cost Bush some votes. Yes, it lacks class, but we don't expect Republicans to be classy. What a fitting tribute to Reagan at the end of his life - he goes out with a snub.

1. Hypocrites!
And they made such a fuss about a few partisan remarks at Wellstone's funeral, now they're going to turn Reagan's into a Republican love fest.

I can hear them now talking about how Republicans must be victorious in November to "Win One for the Gipper"

2. As I
understand it the family made the call as to who will be speaking.
At the time of Nixon's death Clinton was in the oval office, so I am sure that played into his speaking.

As an independent I will say it is interesting reading various sites, the hate on both sides of the aisle is beyond belief. I do not hate my ex son-in-law as much (well OK maybe I do) as I see displayed on the web. When either Carter or Clinton die I can save you all a lot time just save all the messages from each side change the names and repost.

Flame away

3. If someone is hateful, wrong and lies
And we hate them because they know what they are doing is that wrong? A waste of energy?

Pointing out the hate, lies and worse and hating the perpetrator may not be constructive but it is a choice that one can make.

7. If it makes you feel any better
I don't hate conservatives in general. I hate very specific conservatives. I feel a great deal of frustration with cons, say, the ones over at FreeRepublic, but it's mostly just frustration (and sometimes bewilderment).

You are absolutely correct, however, when you compare the radical elemnts' vitriol with one another. It's really kind of scary at times (while I never liked Reagan, I never posted that I was glad he was dead or hoped that he would burn in Hell, either -- and for that matter, I wouldn't wish Alzheimer's on anybody).

Oh, well. Se la vie (or however the French spell it).

GO KERRY!

4. All I can say is -- two words (guess what they are)
FUCK 'EM. Hard. Repeatedly.

Other than us here on DU (me included), Dem STATESMEN like John Kerry have been generous in their praise and respectful in their remarks regarding Raygun Ronnie. But obviously the Pukes only want REAL AMURKANS to "their" party.

But of course, Smirk is a UNITER, not a divider.

I say again, FUCK 'EM. Rot in hell, Ronnie.

5. This is just plain silly. What would you have Democrats do?
Praise someone who set about dismantling every New Deal/ Democratic policy since FDR? Make phony speeches about what a "great president" the godfather of the neocons was?

If a Democrat was the sitting president right now, of course he would be obligated to offer the appropriate platitudes, but thankfully, as it happens, it isn't necessary.

It's utterly nonsensical to complain about no Democrats speaking at Reagan's funeral. Let the Republicans own him -- why would Dems WANT to?

6. Clinton Was Generous to Nixon
It's not inevitable that a state funeral be characterized by nasty partisanship. Republicans chose to have it that way. Clinton was generous to the utterly undeserving Nixon. That's how it should be at a president's funeral. Hold your nose if you have to, but say something nice.

8. Clinton was the President then! He was fulfilling a duty of his office.
Republicans are running the show now, in the government AND the Reagan funeral rites. That's just the way it is. If Gore were president, HE'D be making the "farewell Reagan" speeches.

EVERYTHING the Republicans do these days is partisan. That IS the reality right now.

We've got a whole country to change. This funeral nonsense will pass, fixing the country is a long term task. Why sweat the small stuff?

Why don't people show us some respect for speaking out against the damned madness?

Why do we keep getting slammed for speaking the truth about RR, et al?

How come folks come on this board expecting the rest of us to say what they want too hear?
