Enemies like these--violent, illogical, pedantic, ignorant, uneducated--help keep self-doubt at bay. These, my friends, are the voices of Republican voters. These are supporters of George W. Bush. They support the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They have no problem with prisoner abuse in Iraq. They represent the dark, racist underbelly of America. We must never forget that they are out there, and we must never, ever stop working to make sure their kind gets to impose its will on those of us who think.

Bush v. Reagan

I've written this week's column, which will go up later today, concerning the similarities between Gov. Dubya and Ronald Reagan. But there's also a major difference.

When George W. Bush dies someday, please bear in mind that, unlike Ronald Reagan--a duly-elected president--Bush will not be entitled to a state funeral or placing flags at half staff. As an illegal usurper who seized power extraconstitutionally, Bush should be buried at sea, in a simple shroud, and returned to the sharks that spawned him. Reagan, for all of his faults, should at least be acknowledged as a former president.

On a side note, you get no credit from me for comparing today's political climate to 1930's and 1940's Germany. It may be a good model for concepts in the extreme, but the baggage it carries merits you throwing it around with much more scrutiny. This is another example where carelessness, and lack of tact, reduce whatever yous ay to drivel.

We serve our movement little, if at all, by becoming the caricature of ourselves. Becoming so full of anger and hatred we forget our humanity and compassion, leads to us being hypocrits.

I want to edn this on the correct note: I hate the Reagan legacy, and am all for noting its flaws, but if you want to change hearts and minds, being the Drill Sargeant for the Left isn't gonna do it.

I can't help it if you can't see that this is about SO MUCH MORE than simple politics.

I also can't help it if you find my comparisons to 1930s and 1940s Germany distasteful and discrediting. The parallels are there for all to see, and I fell in good company the MANY otrhers, including a German Justice Minister.

Take this bit of anecdotal evidence as you see fit, but it's the truth. A friend of mine who was the CEO of a small scientific company went over to Germany to solicit investment capital in 2002. 2002, mind you! He met with Upper Middle Class Germans, CEOs, CFOs, etc, no nosering-wearing Greens here.

Upon his return he even shcoked me, who makes the comparison all the time, by telling me, "All the Germans over there are comparing Bush to Hitler."

Although what would the Germans know about Hitler, eh?

So THAT you can cram (COMMENT REDACTED) because I am gojng to call it as I see it. The parallels are there and they are NUMEROUS (overt racism and violence being two categories the Busheviks are for the moment still substantially different than the Nazis, lucky us).

If more had spoken up in 1929-1933 as I do, maybe things would have been different. So I don't really care about your "head-in-the-sand-ism" nor all the many things you "refuse to admit" (say, you think the Jews who stuck around in Germany "refused to admit a thing or two to themselves? Naaaah!).

And I, as undoubtedly the Jews who fought the Nazis did, recognize that to study evil is to be studied by evil, to get down and dirty and fight evil is to endanger yourself with becoming as the evil you fought.

What can I say but that we must do BOTH THINGS: Stand up and CHALLENGE LIES VIGOROUSLY! And we must always remind ourselves that we do what we do out of choice, and that at the end of the day it must be as a suit of armor, easily removed or else WE will one day become Totalitarian Oppressors.

On that I agree with you. It is the ONLY thing.

First he insults a fallen soldier and then has the nerve to blame him for being killed by frienly fire.

Anyone with more depth than a toad knows that being killed by friendly fire does not make your death any less heroic than being killed by enemy fire or a helicoptor accident. These are but few of dangers all those brave people face who put their lives on the line to protect America.
