Puke alert: NCLB "statue" unveiled
http://susanohanian.org/show_nclb_atrocities.html?id=604

Linking from Susan Ohanion's site, since I appreciate her comments on the article.

HAMILTON - When 13-year-old Maria Montes looks at the bronze statue of herself on the plaza of Hamilton High School, she's proud.

Proud that two years ago, as a fifth-grader, she was on the stage as President Bush signed the historic No Child Left Behind education-reform act in her adopted hometown.

"I hope my family will be proud of it. I've never been in a statue," said Maria, who came to Hamilton from Mexico almost four years ago. "It looks younger than me."

Maria is depicted in one of the nine life-size figures in the bronze-and-granite No Child Left Behind Sculpture Plaza, dedicated Tuesday. The artwork was commissioned and paid for by Hamilton philanthropists Donna and Ralph "Pat" Carruthers to commemorate the Jan. 8, 2002, signing.

1. Mission Accomplished.
More of the same. Raise a statue. Hoist a banner. It doesn't matter what has actually transpired, so long as the people believe it. More Goebbels-esque PR from this misadministration.

3. Yes, and in bronze,
it can misrepresent this so-called president's "contributions" to public education many generations to come. Bronze propaganda.

I want this shit put up on e-bay so we can get some of our tax dollars back. While he's had it drop the entire BS act and just give the public schools , I don't know..MORE MONEY.

8. On ebay!
That's a fun idea. Kind of like the guy who sold his ex-wife's wedding dress.

I'd rather see it melted down into coins with a simple symbol, and sold as fundraisers for local schools in Ohio. Maybe this one:

5. Jesus Christ. How about a statue of Lenin, too?
I guess we all got spoiled living in the Old American Republic, laughing at those under the iron boots of Lying Totalitarian Tyrants.

Now, the joke is on us.

Some might say that's just desserts...I don't.

Free America was remaking the world into a democracy. Bushevik Imperial Amerika is remaking it into a Totalitarian Darkness.

6. What a steaming load of camel snot...
Three talking points for Freepers who extoll the virtues of NCLBA.

1. Testing Is Not Reform. If I step on my bathroom scale every morning, will I automatically lose weight? So why would you think that testing kids every year will make them smarter? Testing is a method for determining if your reforms are working, but the NCLBA didn't include any reforms, much less the funding to implement them. Which brings us to...

2. NCLBA Is Grossly Underfunded. What the mathematically-challenged conservatives like to say is that education funding is up $4.4 billion dollars, so NCLBA couldn't possibly be underfunded. Explain it this way: You've been making a $200 car payment on a Ford and then go out and buy a Mercedes that has a $400 payment. If you pay $300 per month, you're spending 50% more on your car payment, but that's not going to impress to Repo Man when he comes to tow your car back to the dealership.

3. NCLBA Is A Huge Encroachment On Local Education. The Act basically takes hiring and firing decisions away from local school boards and the taxpayers who elect them. And it turns teachers into assembly line robots who try to stuff as much "curriculum" into their students' heads as possible before the test.

7. As Jon Stewart famously said...
...it's "in keeping with the administration's policy of naming things the exact opposite of what they really are." See: "Clear Skies Initiative," "Healthy Forests Initiative," "Operation Iraqi Freedom," et al.

9. That's one thing they're consistent with,
isn't it?

My frustration level with people who believe what they're told no matter what is at meltdown point.

What's next?

A "compassionate rehabilitation" program for our prisons?

I could go on, but I don't want to give them any ideas.

10. Maria sounds like an idiot. (Not her fault!)
Not flattering at all to an innocent child. Surely, the reporter could have used better quotes!

This kid was a tool of the BFEE and is now part of a statue to commemorate one of the greatest frauds (unfunded POS photo op legislation) perpetrated by Bush*! History will not be kind to this statue or this legislation.

11. It should have been an 18 year-old eighth grader giving the finger
That's what this act will do all over major urban areas, even if funded properly.
