that book is the most fascinating, all-encompassing tale of the inner workings of the highest levels of government I've ever read

a page-turner to boot

he was the connective tissue for national security in all four of the admins in which he served.

they relied on him in so many different areas, and he was at the heart of so many crucial events, it almost became a parody.

and you KNOW why he quit....he couldn't stand the misapplication of resources, the utter politicization of EVERYthing those fools did, AND the complete incompetence

just sickening to think of all that's happened to our country, both by omission AND commission, since this bunch of lying thieves stole our nation

It was a suprisingly well written book. I recommend it to everyone, try to get it in befor President Clinton's book is released because that one is going to take some time.

and they tried to smear Clarke by saying he was POd about not getting the job under dumbo....that he lobbied for it

4. Read the whole book on a Sunday afternoon...

right after it came out... and yes, it is an incredibly well-written book. Not a dry word in it.

Dean's book too... another page-turner.

Just kidding...read it when it came out, loaned it to a friend and haven't seen it since. And I want to reread it! It's great...too bad it's a true story.

6. I did and I agree...

Once you get past the first chapter (which I found a rather sensationalistic recounting of 9/11) he lays out and constrasts the policies of each of the administrations, and how the action or inaction of each directly led to the situation we find ourselves in today.

I especially liked his rather fond descriptions of Clinton. The scene that stuck with me the most (even though I cannot remember the subject matter right now) is the one where Clinton was making prepared remarks in front of a group and then looked over and winked at Clarke, and Clarke knew instantly that that meant Bill was going to wing it. And he went off, in-depth and knowledgably, on the subject that he and Clarke discussed in the car on the way to the event.

Contrast that to the guy who can't even read a cue card.

9. I'm reading Clark's book now, but I do have one RR question...

...Ronald Reagan joined the army during WWII, but was never put into active front-line duty anywhere overseas because he had bad eye-sight. Yet, in a rare change, Reagan read from a TelePrompter, instead of note cards, when acknowledging his nomination. He was 69 years old at the time. That seems odd to me that his eye-sight would improve as he became older.
