anyone else feel a draft?
There is apparently legislation pending before both house
and senate for a mandatory draft that would also close out
previous loopholes (Canada, college etc). Anyone know more
about these bills (SB89, HR163)? I have already written my rep.

1. They're actually sponsored by two different
Democrats.

I actually think it's a good idea as long as everyone shares the risk. Just watch how fast * and the neo-cons change their tune once their flesh and blood is at risk.

2. but our candidate
wants more and more troops abroad. maybe I'm missing
something here, but seems to me the draft would just
serve make the Bush doctrine permanent, even with a
Dem prez.?

3. Unlimited stop-loss is already in effect
why do we need a political poison pill when the natural level of recruitment is higher than the casualty rate in Iraq?

4. i think it's mostly in protest of the war
i work for an americorps program (http://www.publicallies.org), and Tom DeLay is trying to kill off a bunch of americorps funding and tighten the restrictions.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/25/opinion/25TUE2.html

“After suffering a near-death experience last year because of central accounting problems and a lack of financing, AmeriCorps is again in trouble. This time, enemies of AmeriCorps in Congress, led by Tom DeLay, want to change the organization's rules in ways that would dismantle many of the most effective and cost-efficient agencies that operate local AmeriCorps programs.

Mr. DeLay and other Republican lawmakers want to impose arbitrary limits on the number of years an established program may receive financing, and to require an unrealistically steep increase in the amount of money these groups must secure from other sources. Their dubious plan is to rely much more heavily on part-time volunteers, and on religious groups and start-up organizations that have no proven record or organization for effectively supervising AmeriCorps members.”

when talking about americorps and the draft, an americorps alum said to me, "we should just have a mandatory draft. and then you watch them fund all those programs so their kids can get out of service. fucking bastards."
