63. Even though I'm short on cash, I happily gave money to the DNC
I have more immediate concerns in mind than having every last one of my wishes met by candidate Kerry. Yes, I'd love for him to shake things up more (would much rather have had Dean or Clark in office), but you "libertarian types" have to realize we first must get Kerry elected and retake the House/Senate to start changing things. It's the swing voters who hate Bush but are don't want to vote for a highly liberal candiate who must be pulled in. We can make bigger changes later.

I agree - nothing accomplished by telling the DNC to screw off.

21. Well I'm telling you to be practical
We most certainly do have a candidate. Furthermore, the DNC can continue sponsoring advertising for Kerry after the Democratic Convention, whereas once Kerry has accepted the nomination, his "war chest" is closed, but Bush doesn't have to close his until he accepts the Republican nomination FIVE WEEKS LATER.

Should you like to reconsider, you can get more bang for your buck by making a donation to the DNC through this link:

https://www.democrats.org/support/match.html?dsc=NETA206-60

They currently have a matching fund drive.

The ONLY candidate worthy of your support this fall is Superman.

Think about it, we wouldn't have to pay for the military, he could catch bin Laden himself...he could run on giant treadmill and provide electricity for all the country...our economy could be based on diamonds he creates from lumps of coal...if he can manage the Justice League, he should be able to deal with Congress.

I refuse to support a candidate until one lives up to these fictional standards! Who cares if we get Bush for 4 more years, I want a man in office with heat vision dammit!

65. Love that black & white thinking; kind of reminds me of the RW...
i.e.,"Sorry, either you're hot or your not."

Sometimes slow & steady wins the race and the superficially exciting ones flame out or blunder badly.

It may feel good to vote for someone who "inspires" you more than Kerry. As for ME (since we're talking about what makes us feel good during those moments at the polls), W inspires me to support Kerry or whoever else might have been the Democratic candidate. It's the only realistic choice.

Actually, Kerry inspires A LOT of us because he's willing to take on all the short & long term problems & damage done by Bushco. And I believe he can do it, too. He's faced death in Vietnam, then had the guts to come back to the U.S. & tell the truth about it, and he's put in a lot of years on the campaign trail & in office.

So while some are waiting for the perfect candidate, all of us have the possiblity of being inspired to DEATH under right wing rule.

With today's 24/7 media coverage, there's never going to be a perfect candidate, just like there's no such thing as the perfect spouse or mate. So get real!

The Dems did not get to vote for a candidate. One was appointed for us in Iowa. A real candidate would be one that gave a damn about the citizens of this country and and one that would work to change the fucking perilous path we've been on, at least since Reagan. They couldn't let that happen, now could they?

I quit giving anything to the DNC in November 2002. Why the hell give them anything when they do jack shit?

78. I think he's referring to the DLC/DNC scare tactics
The typical scare tacitcs:

-a very distasteful ad from AFJHPV (Americans for Healthcare and Progressive Values) a.k.a. "DLC" scaring people into believing that if Dean was elected Osama would kill us all

-The DNC chairman, Terry Mccauliffe, endorsing Kerry for president REPEATEDLY after the first primary. (Even though as DNC chairmain he is supposed to remain neutral)

-Media chroinies with interests rooted in the DLC fucking Dean as well as others and saying noone has a chance against Bush besides Kerry. Dean - 40% positive media coverage leading up to the Iowa primary.
Kerry-98% positive, Edwards - 100% positive. Hard to compete with those numbers.

-Urging Clark to run solely for the purpose to combat Dean's movement. See Charlie Rose interview 2/12/04 where Clark himself admits that he was approached by members of the DLC/DNC and asked to run as the anti-Dean candidate

The pundits claim that Dean's "rage" did him in....No he was assassignated in broad daylight....

But of course as long as your interests are served, you could care less right????

82. Possibly, the DNC
turned against Gov Dean because they did not want to make another "long march" into the wilderness like they did in 1972 with George McGovern. The only two presidents we have elected since then were cetrists who campaigned a bit to the right of center, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

Wesley Clark was saying all of the right things, but duringhisclimb to the top in the military, he stabbed so many people in the back and cut so many corners that "opposition research" would have a fieldday with all of the former military officers coming forward with dirt about Clark.

Kerry may not be inspiring and his too visible Senate record provides too many avenues of misinterpretation and attack (JFK was the only sitting senator elected president in this century), but he is solid and everybody in the party can't have a candidate who agrees with their views 100% accross the board.

87. Explanation
I was in the military a long time. I never met Wesley Clark, but I heard of him even when he was a relatively junior officer. I have no direct eveidence of any wrong doing on his part, just a "feel" from things that I heard that there were many officers who strongly disliked him during his career as being a backstabber and "getting away with things". I would think that these might well be ferreted out during a general election campaign. Didn't a former chief of staff allude to "integrity issues"?

David Halberstam's book "War in a Time of Peace" about US foreign policy during the Clinton years includes a pretty good summary of General Clerk's Army career and his relations with fellow Army officers. Halberstam is very kind to President Clinton, but somewhat critical of Madelline Albright.

So please understand that when you say, "The Dems did not get to vote for a candidate," you are speaking only for yourself -- and even you had your chance to vote. Saying "John Kerry won Iowa and that was it" is a crock of shit. Lots of candidates have taken the nom without winning Iowa and/or New Hampshire.

48. Thanks for letting us know. How much should I donate on your behalf?
Seeing as how the DNC is the main organization that can spend the big bucks to uproot the shrub in November, I will make the donation in your name. How much do you usually give, $100? $200?

I don't have a job right now, and I'll probably be selling my house pretty soon, but if bush wins in November I'll be losing my country. So I'll pick up the slack for you.

I used to be a registered Pacific Green. I voted for Nader in 1996 and (to my remorse) 2000. I registered as a Democrat in May to vote for Dennis Kucinich in the primary, and I'm deadly serious about removing a nest of extremely dangerous psychopaths from the Whitehouse. I'm a Kerry man now. I may not approve of everything he does, but if he asks for my support I'll be right there backing him up. 100%. All the way.

49. HEy, I picked up the slack for him already
Donated $100 to Kerry.

Turned around and donated $50 to Barack Obama, too.

Then I went and volunteered for the Gloria Andersen campaign in the 13th Illinois Congressional district!

54. I agree. I now send my money to individual democratic canidiates,
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 11:04 PM by Zinfandel
and to the wonderful MoveOn.org, ACLU, PFTAW, Sierra Club and a few others.

I now toss the (generic) DLC AND the DNC mailers in the trash...I want to make my own decisions...(As they pretend to know better).

Tired of their shit!

56. Only 2 choices for prez. Kerry or Bush.
Take your pick. Which one will do less damage? You be the judge. But don't give up because you don't get what you want, or else you may find you don't get what you need. (with credit to the rolling stones...)

I assert that the real problem you are grappling with is not our choice of candidates, but the manner in which we elect them.

The reality is, we can't change the way we elect them (not in the short term).

Given that reality, pick the candidate with the best chance to minimize your pain.

And for the long term, look to support organizations that seek a more progressive election system.

57. Libertarians and Greens?
Not like they're diametrically opposed or anything.

Let me guess: you're a single-issue voter.

all of your views? Well, that'll never happen because perfection doesn't exist!

66. I agree with you sentiment 100%
We aren't looking for perfection. But since the Dem party is anti-war, we'd like an anti-war candidate. Hello? That's the most important issue of the day, and our candidate disagrees with 80% of his party. WTF???

Then he goes and endorses Sharon's crimes against humanity...

I will vote for Kerry. But I make no attempt to convince anyone to do the same. Our party is easy to sell. Our position are easily defensible. Not so for Kerry.

I have Freeper-type friends. Even they are coming over to our point of view. And why not? It only makes sense. But John Kerry is on the other side.

68. It's sad, but you're right.

I'm also going to vote for Kerry, but I will be holding my nose. My only hope is that Kerry is acting more "right" than he is. I seem to remember a "lefter" Kerry in the 1980s.

67. I'm gonna go give $50 to Kerry now
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 12:13 AM by Moonbeam_Starlight
You know, I was a Dean person. But I would vote for my CAT over chucklenuts junior over there, so it really doesn't matter at this point. (And all my cat does is eat, crap, sleep and vomit up hairballs. Does that tell you how I feel about chucklenuts?)

Get Kerry in, then we'll start on our changes to the DNC. I used to always vote third party. Nevermore. I am going to change the system from the inside, hell of a lot easier than from the outside.

70. HEY MODERATOR......WHY WAS MY POST #44 REMOVED!!??
Unless you're going to send me one of the DU "tsk, tsk, tsk" emails and send me an official "You have been bad" notification and mark it down in my permanent DU record, please put it BACK.

There was nothing in it that personally attacked a specific person. For crying out loud, there's a lot of fucking censorship around here for something called DEMOCRATIC Underground.

All of us talk about how our First Ammendment rights are being eroded and we have to deal with censorship HERE?

Put the damned post back.

77. *Throws up hands in disgust*
Being idealistic is fine so long as you don't actually practice it regarding American democracy. There are two parties and there always will be two parties. Just because you are not happy with everything the Democrats stand for doesn't mean that you have to abandon them. I disagree with the Democrats on many issues, but I recognize that's just how this system works. People like you get these ridiculous notions and it will just end up hurting this country.
