Putin: Democrats had "no moral right" to criticize President Bush
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 10:38 PM by RatTerrier
'Scuze me

:puke:

SEA ISLAND, Ga (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) stepped into the U.S. political campaign on Thursday, saying the Democrats had "no moral right" to criticize President Bush (news - web sites) over Iraq (news - web sites).

The Kremlin leader, answering a reporter's question in Sea Island, Georgia, suggested that the Democrats were two-faced in criticizing Bush on Iraq since it had been the Clinton administration that authorized the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia by U.S. and NATO (news - web sites) forces.

(snip)

He went on: "I am deeply convinced that President Bush's political adversaries have no moral right to attack him over Iraq because they did exactly the same.

Putin should be more concerned about his screwed-up country. Wasn't he against the IWR?

So next time a freeper whines about foreign leaders meddling in our affairs...

Seems like a logical statement given his country's history, even though to us it is so very illogical.

12. Thanks for your comments, Mr. KGB
I don't think I need any lectures on morality from the former head of that particular agency. But anytime Mr. Putin would like to come with me or some of my CPT friends, and see the results of his handiwork, I'll be more than happy to conduct him.

Then we can sit down with the survivors, the maimed, the crippled, the terrorized, and have a nice little chat about morality.

13. Of course he would think this way because
he almost got a butt kicking from Wes Clark's army during Kosova when the Rooskies tried to take over that airport. Putin was a commander in the then-Russian army, if memory serves. They were against our military action.

I also don't think Putin liked Clinton at all. They never got too chummy with each other.

By the same logic, the butcher of Chechnya has no right to criticize Bush over Iraq, either.

Oh, how I had the taste of red herring.

23. Instead of sayin' "Fuck you Putin"
shouldn't we be wondering why he would make this public comment?
He didn't support Bush in Iraq OR Clinton in Yugoslavia.
Who's being consistent, who's not?
Dem's supported Clinton, Repugs supported Bush.
Our "friend" Putin, supported neither.

I'm going to assume that I'm wrong here, considering that not a single other person in this thread interpreted his comment the way I did, but I think he's just saying what many people here have said before, basically that if you supported (voted) for the Iraq war, you don't have a very clear moral position to now argue against it from.

Now, I don't agree with that, and I don't feel particularly comfortable in defending him, but I don't think he was attempting to convey anything positive toward *'s direction at all. I actually think it's a fairly "left" statement.

...while the rest of the world's attention has been focused elsewhere post 9/11, Putin has pretty much had a free hand in "dealing" with the Chechens.

29. Hmm lots of attacking the messenger. I'll play devil's advocate
The anti-war left was virtually silent on our military adventures in Kosovo and Somalia. Furthermore, there was no peace with Iraq during the Clinton Administration. Must I remind everyone that we bombed them at regular intervals?

I had read a number of times on this board people critizing Bush Sr. on Iraq and Bush Jr. on Iraq. Conspicuous by absence is any criticism of Clinton policy on Iraq.

Could it be because people around here tend to like Clinton?

30. Not necessarily defending Clinton
but I seem to recall a lot of pressure from humanitarian groups and Europe for NATO and the U.S. to do something about Milosevic.

31. What "anti-war left" are you talking about?
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 03:56 AM by Aidoneus
Much of what you say is right, but I wonder who you are speaking of. I agree that many of those opposing Bush are hypocrites and opportunists who seem to only object to that "(R)" next to the names of some Republicans, but I would not refer to them as "the anti-war left" by any stretch.

On the contrary, there was quite active opposition to Clinton in this period:--there was no free pass given to Clinton from those that I would refer to as the "anti-war left".

This is an important point to make, but I believe you greatly overstep yourself with the phrasing of the first body sentence.

Then again, there's a "WJC was an amazing President" thread..

38. Perhaps I was being provocative
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 05:27 AM by Liberal Classic
I did say I was playing devil's advocate.

The truth is I remember clearly *some* of my friends opposing the bombing campaign in eastern europe. However there was not the concerted and organized opposition to Clinton's military adventures from the left as there was from the right, just as today there is less opposition from the right but there is from the left.

It seems to depend on who is quarterbacking, IMO.

ON EDIT:

I just went over and read that other thread you mentioned. Fourty-odd posts so far and no one's mentioned Iraq, Afganistan, or Kosovo. One reference to Somalia blaming the UN. Several comments of a peace time president with no war.

It definately depends on who is quarterbacking.

32. What is Russia doing at the G-8 summit?
The G-8 should be a summit of the major league World Economies to discuss broader issues and solutions they feel should be addressed. Including Russia in the G-8 summit is like having a Minor League baseball team competing in the Major League playoffs! The per capita income in Russia is $9,700, the Ruble is worth 3 cents, unemployment is nearly 8%, and the Russian life expectancy is 67...ten years lower than in the U.S., which has the second lowest average. By most standards Russia is a second-rate economy in the middle of a crushing depression. Russia should be one of the topics for the G-8 summit, not one of the members...

35. Definition of "Chickenhawk"
Somebody who supports a war & is of the age to fight it--but manages to avoid service. Clinton opposed our involvement in Vietnam & managed to stay in school--as many of my generation did. When he got out, his draft number saved him. He was not a Chickenhawk.

And who are you, pray tell?
