Bravo's Attempt to Buck the Republican Machine?
I was really really depressed about the absolute avalanche of coverage on Reagan's death last night.

Then I had reason for small hope:
"Escape from New York" came on last night on Bravo. I think that this was Bravo's attempt to be a little subversive. Obviously, the character of the president in the movie is somewhat based on Reagan's character. Unfeeling and dismissive towards the hoards of "lowlifes" in New York City. Also, there's a shot of Kurt Russell, as he's wandering around the streets, with all these old buildings and burned out diners and such, and we see Kurt against a large billboard that says "Air Traffic Controllers" - in HUGE letters.

I think this was John Carpenter's dig at Reagan (remember Reagan fired all those air traffic controllers that went on strike). Hurray for Carpenter, and hurray for Bravo for playing it last night!

1. It was a pointed barb against Reagan
Crime up 400%, millions out of work, and the President doesn't give a crap. Sounds like 1982 to me.

3. Since these things are programmed weeks ahead of time,
I doubt it was intentional.

The sequel nails 'em even more
The president in "Escape From LA" is an Ashcroft-type facist.

And it was made a few years before he became AG.

Also see: "They Live"

4. do you realize that that Patco, the air traffic controllers
endorsed Reagan in 1980. Of course Reagan was known for fucking those who put their trust in him. You can ask the Screen Actors Guild about that. You can also ask the Hollywood 10.
