Teamsters Union Announces Plan To Organize In Mexico!
Teamsters: Mexican truckers should join them

By JACK KATZANEK

The Riverside Press-Enterprise
Thursday, June 10, 2004

Unionized truck drivers, facing possible job losses when U.S. borders are opened to Mexican trucks, want to persuade their Mexican counterparts to join the Teamsters or an affiliated labor group.

"We're going to intensify a lot of things," said Randy Cammack, secretary-treasurer of Rialto-based Teamsters Local 63. "We're having discussions with Mexican unions, and we want to put some pressure on the Mexican government to do some things to make organizing more accessible, for their unions and ours."

Cammack acknowledges grass-roots organizing south of the border will be difficult, especially if the union wants to sign up new Teamsters. He said it was more likely they would try to persuade existing Mexican unions to affiliate with the Teamsters.

"We've had some difficult times with Mexican companies," Cammack said. "But once we've been organized, we've had better relations with them than we've had with some of the age-old American companies."
