Heads up duers!!!!(immunity from prosecution of torture)
Here is WHY BUSH STATES THAT THE US FORCES WORK WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF LAW IN REGARDS TO TORTURE OR ABUSES.......and he states that this is supposed to ease our trouble minds over torture......

SNIP -
Under the regulations passed by the Coalition Provisional Authority, there is immunity for these acts under Iraqi law. The US and Britain want immunity to continue after June 30, putting emphasis on domestic accountability where, in practice, there is none. If this legal analysis prevails, principles of democracy and the rule of law count for little in post-occupation Iraq.

If you care to read the entire article, it appears that the Brits have a bit of torture/murder troubles of their own....and a legal black hole too........

1. But that is Iraqi law... Do we have smart constitutional lawyers,
public law, etc. that can bring suits on their own? Apparently our congress people will not be able to do much with a Repug controlled congress (I was reading somewhere that the chairs of committees have to START CONTEMPT OF CONGRESS PROCEEDINGS... After Hatch said that "the committee was doing things for 'political reasons'" right at the end of the meeting, I knew that there is no chance in hell to have them declare Ashcroft in contempt.

2. Shrub specifically cited US law
and the chief exec can't write extraconstitutional writs and expect them to go unchallenged. He can't have it both ways. Altho it may have been legal in Iraq (I get the feeling they're making this up as they go along and just seeing how much we'll swallow) it violates US treaties against torture and can't be eliminated with a mere presidential signature. That's the principle. Will it stand, or will we become a dictatorship?

This is a constitutional crisis. We need more Congressional participation.

3. Prosecution will have to take place under the ICC

They couldn't be tried ex post facto anyway.

UN exemption for US war crime prosecution runs out on June 30. That is the only significant hope.
