Reaganpalooza.....thank god it's over!
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 08:22 PM by Cascadian
Tired of all of the hoopla? I am.

The only thing I can be sympathetic towards Reagan is the fact he had the same disease that my Grandfather had. Alzheimer's. It is a horrible disease. However, I will never ever forget what Reagan did to this country. He created major debt, ushered in "trickle-down" economics and free trade that never really went away, widened the gap between rich and poor, covert wars and befriending dictatorships in Latin America, and closing mental institutions creating a new homeless class.

Not much to celebrate on his presidency. I will give him the fact he was far more eloquent than the guy we have in the White House now and he would have been one hell of president if he were still an FDR Democrat instead of a Conservative Republican. However, I will not mourn the life of Reagan. My Granfather was a hero to me. Reagan wasn't.

I wonder how the country and it's media will treat Carter and Clinton when it's their time to go?

John

3. Oh, just go bask in the Orgasmic Reagan Afterglow.
Ciao, non-thinking moran!!

Spare us your "I have five posts but I'm here to lecture all y'all on how disillusioned I am, and how wretched I find you lot" in your next incarnation, will you? :boring:

7. He's spamming his last gasp all over the boards, Cascadian.
It's boring, it's deperate, and it's lame.

Nothing personal, my friend.

19. When someone is new to the list and they praise the enemy I
assume they haven't educated themselves yet. Perhaps that's what has happened to you.

In the 80's I would have referred to Reagan as President Reagan.I thought it was expected of me though I was disgusted with his policies and his handlers, therefore I was disgusted with him. Personally, I thought he was phoney because I saw him in action in CA and he was scowling, angry, grimacing, and harping. I think they brainwashed him.

He brought all the things other posters have mentioned, plus one heck of a lot of crime. Do you know why they have locks on your gas tanks today? Most of all I detest him for Iran-COntra - while Nancy was telling us to Just Say No To Drugs, his handlers were dumping it on the streets and building prisons.

How are we supposed to turn around and sing his praises? Why should I still call him Prsident Reagan after what his handlers did to Clinton? The very same handlers and now they went on to new killing.

2. I'm happy it's over, too.
The coverage has been staggering... as much as I respect the Office of the Presidency, I also recognize that the Framers wished for a Citizen President, one who, as a citizen, rises to the office, and goes back to being a citizen after his term is up.

It looked and felt to me as though we were burying a King. The aftertaste is horrible, and the Framers are surely turning in their own graves.

Not sure what will happen with Carter, but I have a feeling he'll want something dignified, private, and "unimposing," as Truman wanted. Hell, Truman even wrote it up in his will: NO EULOGIES!! That's my kind of President!! Now, Clinton... hell, we've got 30-40 years to worry ourselves with it. He's young, he's healthy, and he's got the best health plan known to mankind. :-)

The Reagasm is over... for that, I'm pleased. :D

8. Citizen Carter will be buried privately.
I doubt he'd put his beloved nation through this. It's just not fitting of him, of his legacy, of his character.

Grandstanding is a Republican game, for the most part.

Citizen Carter will be buried peacefully, privately. We will mourn just as much, of course.

21. Carter Is Like Hoover
Both men were intelligent, decent, and compassionate. Both men took over the office of president at a time when the ship of state was going into the breakers. Both men were decisively turned out of office by the voting public. If either man had passed away right after their term of office, they would have been seen as tragic figures. Both men embarked on a career of service after leaving the presidency that has rehabilitated and burnished their image.

Obviously, President Carter's funeral plans depend on his wishes and mrs Carter's wishes.

17. Hallelujah!!!
:toast:

I did enjoy hearing his children speak about him. He was obviously a good father, just don't agree with his politics.

Bush on the other hand is just plain evil.

20. My favorite Alzheimer's story.
An old man walks into a Doctor's office. The Doctor says, "I have bad news and I have worse news." The man asks, "What is the bad news?" The Doctor says, "You have cancer, it is inoperable and terminal." The man asks, "What is the worst news?" The doctor replies, "You have Alzheimer's disease." The man says, "Alzheimer's disease? Well . . . at least I don't have cancer." (BTW: I have an aunt with Alzheimer's, I know it is very tragic.)

The problem with the media is not Alzheimer's, but selective memory. As soon as they apologize for not retaining their objectivity during the march to war in Iraq, I find myself saying, "There you go again!"

Have they all forgotten that Reagan was almost impeached for activities related to the Iran contra scandal? He personally signed a finding supporting the "Guns for Hostages" plan, not illegal, but so obviously stupid that it boggles the mind. What about running the deficit up from one to four trillion dollars on that riverboat gamble income tax reduction, based largely on made up numbers?

Can you believe some news pundits are saying he was the greatest president since FDR? By now, I can believe anything.
