What Happened To The End Of The World?
Wasn't it suppose to be happening about now? I just looked outside. We're still here.

It's in another thread somewhere around here... something about us being 1 point away from the uber-exclusive "rapture". Lemme go find it...

here :

I am going to use the phrase "deliriously happy naked flying Christians" as many times as I can

6. Not the end of the world. Just the end of the world as we know it.
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 09:19 PM by Minstrel Boy
And that's already old news.

I don't think anyone said it was supposed to happen about now, but there are rumours floating about regarding supposed asteroid impacts June 18-20. Also floating about: 10 of 12 US carriers and battle escorts. The latter gives me more pause for concern.

on June 26

 :tinfoilhat:

(actually supposed to miss by 5 AU's, if I have that right)

10. 0.0128 AU - June 27
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 09:46 PM by RoyGBiv
It comes closest on June 27th at .0128 AU.

We had another one -- can't remember the name -- already come as close as .014 AU the first week of the month.

15. oops, it's 5 LD's
Lunar distances. Proof positive yet again that I know way too little about the whole subject.

But I get a kick out of checking the space weather recently....

http://spaceweather.com/

(where they probably have your other "near" miss at the bottom.)

I read somewhere they (maybe it was European?) are landing a craft on this one next year.

19. Yeah, that was it...
It was approximately .04 AU apparently.

The LD measurement feels better than the AU measurement. If we start seeing any .0xx LD's, then I'll freak out.

I've heard of the mission you mention, but I can't recall who is doing it.

Yep, hard to think about an AU, but you were right earlier, 0.0129 AU on the 27th--close enough for that java orbit link I posted above to not show a miss (set orbit to earth and zoom in as far as it goes).

I will make sure to have a cold one on the 27th to honor the miss (as if I need a reason.... But still!).

:toast:

Edit: cool, you can change the 3d in that Java thing. It goes under.

17. And then in September, here come Toutatis.
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 09:59 PM by Minstrel Boy
It's expected to pass us at .0011 AU. That's pretty damn close, considering an impact would likely be an extinction level event. It's three miles long, crosses our path every three years, and tumbles through space like a "fumbled pass," making it difficult to predict.

Want an illustration of how close Toutatis is coming, run this NASA java simulation. Note how, at the end of September, Earth and Toutatis are indistinguishable.

28. The simulation shows the minimum distance as 0.0103 AU
not 0.0011 AU - still further than the Moon, then.

Wasn't there suppose to be a huge dust cloud right about now that was to be the prelude to all the fun stuff on June 18-20, Its been raining so much here in San Antonio this week that I was afraid that I'd miss the dust cloud.:)

Certainly an interesting name.

And for some reason the navy is engaging in a "show of force" near Bioko Island in the Gulf of Guinea. Bioko Island - aka, Fernando Po(o).

16. Who was that radio host who swore the world would end in '92 or '93?
I remember listening to his show the night the world was supposed to end, and he was still running advertising for his stuff. Anybody remember who it was? I heard it in SE PA, but I believe he was national.

23. June 18-20
is supposidly about when the first impact is supposed to be.

However according to the conspiracy theory, it never blatently states that the world is going to end or that we are all going to die. Its pretty much implied that we will be fucked but not that we are all going to be killed off.

26. All the praying by Christians has postponed it.
As long as enough Christians pray real long and real hard, God will postpone it to a later date (of which he will only inform his representatives on earth people like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell). So thank the Christians for all their praying thats saves our lives every day.
