Fahrenheit 9/11 trailer in Repug hell ...
I live in a VERRRRY Republican area of Pennsylvania. Tonight, I went to see "Saved!" at our local movie palace. Perhaps I was in the theater with all the local subversives, going to see this send-up of Christian high school.

Anyway, when the "Fahrenheit 9/11" trailer came on (I can't believe they're going to show it here in Republican Hell!), and there was a particularly offensive scene featuring George W. Bush speaking into the camera, someone behind me yelled, "DOUCHEBAG"!

WOW -- I felt a thrill go through me. You'd have to know just how Republican this place is to realize how out of place someone yelling that to Dubya's face in a public place is. They proceeded to make fun of Ashcroft, as well.

Wooooo hoooo!

3. This is why I can't wait to see it in the theater
It was like that during "Bowling for Columbine." A collective experience -- collective gasps, laughs, and snorts of outrage.

Very cathartic.

8. I grew up in SE PA--Delaware County
The political patterns in Delaware County, as well as in the other counties surrounding Philadelphia have been trending a bit more Democratic in recent years, though on the local level Republicans still rule the roost. (Republicans have controlled county government for about 130 years.)

On the presidential level, though, Dems have made some inroads. Back in the Sixties, Kennedy won Delaware County, largely because of a large Catholic vote, and Johnson won it as well in his 1964 landslide. But then the county went back into reliably Republican mode for Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush I's first term. Since then, though, the county has voted for Clinton in 1992 and 1996 and Gore in 2000. Three of the four suburban counties--Bucks, Delaware and Montgomery--went for Gore in 2000, while Chester County just barely went for Shrub.

The same pattern can be seen in NYC's suburban counties, especially Westchester and Nassau. Nassau once had a Republican machine that was even more powerful than Delaware County's, but now the county government is in the hands of the Dems, largely because irresponsible Republican fiscal policies, which were very similar to those on the national level, nearly bankrupted Nassau.

Overall, I believe suburban counties in the Northeast, Upper Midwest and West Coast are growth areas for the Dems.

9.  "saved!" was pretty good!
It's not the greatest movie ever, but I really enjoyed it. I was a born-again in high school (ugh, don't remind me!), so I could identify with a lot of stuff in the film. It was fun to laugh at my former self (though I was never as bad as is Hilary Fay (played with delicious self-righteousness by Mandy Moore)). I thought the script was quite clever, and I found myself moved by it.

Of course, all the subversive kids are the most interesting ones in the Xtian school. But it also shows some of the self-righteous kids learning and evolving, which is great. It's not a total trashing of Christianity or belief in God, just of the intolerant, self-righteous kind.

I thought the acting was great -- Jena Malone, Patrick Fugit, McCauley Culkin, Ava Amurri (Susan Sarandon's daughter) ... the lot.
