It is time to shove this in the media's face.
I am reading Amy Goodman's book The Exception to the Rulers".

It's really pissing me off.

It's a great book, by the way.

This is from the first chapter. It recounts how the United States, and mainly Colin Powell, was able to take Saddam Hussein's 12,000 report on his weapons and chop out 8,500 pages of it.

Censored because it shows that Saddam was armed by the United States, and specificially by the Reagan and Bush I administrations.

And how the American media was SILENT about this.

In retrospect, this should be a huge story. The media needs this shoved down their goddamn throats. It is they who let these fuckwads take over, lie to us, and kill thousands of people.

>>We interviewed Andreas Zumach, a Geneva-based UN correspondent with the German daily newspaper Die Tageszeitung. Zumach had obtained portions of Iraq's report to the United Nations detailing its weapons programs. What Zumach had was a collector's item: He had the parts of Iraq's 12,000 page report that the United States had redcated.

You might think the United States deemed this material dangerous because it could be misused by terrorists. Think again: The material was dangerous because if it got out, it would expose corporate ahd official compolicity in arming Iraq, which might dampen global enthusiasm for war.

The portions of the UN report censored by the US identified at least twenty-four U.S. corporations that helped Iraq build its pre-Gulf War weapons programs and rockets. The list includes

Bechtel (conventional)
DuPont (nuclear)
Eastman Kodak( rocket)
Hewlett-Packard (nuclear, rocket, conventional"
Honeywell (rocket, conventional)
International Computer Systems (nuclear, rocket, conventional)
Rockwell (conventional)
Sperry Corp. (rocket, conventional)
Tektronix (rocket, nuclear)
Unisys (nucleare, conventional)

(snip)
The Reagan and Bush I administrations also authorized sales of deadly chemical and biological agents to Iraq, including anthrax and bubonic plague.

How did this information go missing?

{The Americans were allowed to censure the report to the point where 8,500 pages were lost}

The censored document made no mention of U.S. complicity with arming Saddam Hussein.

(snip)
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan declared that it was "unfortunate" that the United States hijacked the report. Hans von Sporneck, the former assistant secretary general of the UN and the UN's humanitarian coordinator in Iraq until 200, charged, "This is an outrageous attempt by the U.S. to mislead."

You would think that Andreas Zumach's investigative expose would be major news here, right? Wrong.

(snip)

"The big papers in the United states were not interested at all. The European papers, the British, the Scandinavian, the French papers, the Italian, Japanese, Brazilian -- they were all on the telephone with me asking for information and doing huge stories.

There was silence on this side of the Atlantic."

8. you realize how old this story is, right? it was discussed in detail here
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 04:30 PM by buycitgo
last year when it came out.

not criticizing here; it should be brought up constantly, as a reminder of how completely in the pocket of the government these hoes ALL are. thanks for bringing it back up

with a very small exception, like this guy....just found this

THE MEDIA are finished with their big blowouts on the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, and there's one thing they forgot to say: We're sorry.
Sorry we let unsubstantiated claims drive our coverage.
Sorry we were dismissive of experts who disputed White House charges against Iraq.
Sorry we let a band of self-serving Iraqi defectors make fools of us.
Sorry we fell for Colin Powell's performance at the United Nations.
Sorry we couldn't bring ourselves to hold the administration's feet to the fire before the war, when it really mattered.
Maybe we'll do a better job next war.

Of course it's absurd to receive this apology from a person so low in the media hierarchy. You really ought to be getting it from the editors and reporters at the agenda-setting publications, such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. It's the elite print media that failed you the most, because they're the institutions you have to rely on to keep tabs on the politicians in Washington (television news cannot do the kind of in-depth or investigative reporting that print media can do--when they're doing their job properly).

In the past several months, the Times, the Post, and other print media have gotten around to asking questions about the quality of prewar intelligence on Iraq and about whether the administration might have misused that intelligence to sell the war to Americans and the rest of the world.

Most of these media outlets, however, also need to conduct self-examinations. From the horrendously distorted coverage of Times reporter Judith Miller (her sins in many ways were far worse than those of plagiarist/fabricator Jayson Blair) to the bewildering (and biased?) news judgment of the Post's editors, journalists at America's most influential publications helped ensure that a majority of you would be misinformed about Iraq and the nature of the threat it posed to you.

more; worth reading......surprised you haven't heard this from the likes of the outlets this guy mentions? too bad he's not more well-known?

2. I think part of the problem is a lot of the American population don't read
books. They don't read period (except for maybe selected parts of the Old Testament and anything that refers to the Apocolypse). If they can't get their information from Fox, they don't get any info at all.

3. But they are right. THEY WANT TO CAUSE THE APOCALYPSE and
leave piles of clothing behind. And the rest of us will be tortured by the flames of hell with our clothes on.

4. exactly. That IS the problem.
people think, and people assume, that the news media is doing its job, and that if something is really important it will be reported by the news media.

Perhaps it used to be that way, but those days are OVER.

This is why we need news stories that reveal how the news media has dropped the ball.

They need to be publicly shamed.
