Washington Shrink Calls Bush a Paranoid, Sadistic Meglomaniac

A new book by a prominent Washington psychoanalyst says President George W. Bush is a "paranoid meglomaniac" as well as a sadist and "untreated alcoholic." The doctor's analysis appears to confirm earlier reports the President may be emotionally unstable.
Dr. Justin Frank, writing in Bush on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President, also says the President has a ""lifelong streak of sadism, ranging from childhood pranks (using firecrackers to explode frogs) to insulting journalists, gloating over state executions ... pumping his fist gleefully before the bombing of Baghdad."

6. Bush is building "low-yield" nukes right now.
Bush and Rumsfeld seem to believe that 5-kiloton "low-yield" nukes are just the ticket for bunker-busting and pre-emptive invasions.

As a point of reference, the Hiroshima bomb was about 13-kilotons. The results, as we now know, were horrific.

Only a madman would think that "low-yield" nukes would be less than horrific.

If Bush is as unstable as the Doctor says, then Armageddon may come much sooner than we previously thought.

Note, the article headline said "Shrink", but the truth is:

Dr. Frank has been a psychiatrist for 35 years and is director of psychiatry at George Washington University.

15. If and when Smirky goes off the deep end........
and destroys the world, there will still be sheepies who will be ready with countless excuses for him. It's pathetic how some of them think he can do no wrong.

5. Exactly right. It's looking more and more certain we'll rid ourselves
of the mental midget, but .........as you say, we'll still be left with a pathological population.

*THAT'S* where the real work begins..........

It's a daunting task, and I don't even know where it starts.....

7. Not to put a stop to a good bashing of * but
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 09:20 AM by Az
This is not good science. This is not someone that has had direct access to * and as such he is basing his opinions on the same material we have seen. While he may be right this is not the way to prove it. Now if his own personal brain care specialist comes out and says George W Bush is a whack job then we can rejoice. But this is just a guy with a degree and an opinion expressing it with no scientific backing for his claims. Sort of like us. It may be fun but it ain't science.

10. they did the same thing with Clinton
They had various psychological quacks diagnosing him as a "sociopath."

it was dumb to do this nonsense with Clinton, and it's just as dumb with Bush.

11. I gotta disagree, just a little.
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 09:26 AM by FlaGranny
Some signs of mental illness are obvious for all to see, and psychiatrists are trained in observation of those signs. A person does not have to be under psychiatric care for those signs to be obvious. For instance, do you have any doubt about *'s sadistic tendencies? Those are pretty clear.

On edit: * IS an untreated alcoholic - he's admitted that. Megalomania - how about his "I AM the president" attitude and his refusal to listen to any advice he does not agree with. The man may not be certifiable, but there are clearly visible "traits" for all to see.

19. There are any number of possible explanations
Some worse than others. The signals we see may flag points to look for but to make a diagnosis based on the public persona we are presented with is just a bad idea. As I said, the diagnosis may be 100% accurate, but its still guessing.

13. That was my first thought. However...
..."psychoanalyzing" historical figures without the benefit of treating or interacting with them directly is not unheard of. Who ever treated Van Gogh to make the schizophrenia diagnosis, for example. As long as the author makes the limitations of this clear, I don't have a big problem with it.

I swear that the last time I did that, Bush's name came up in the first few hits. Even I was surprised.

There are 10 results on the first page. Bush is the 1st, 4th, 6th,7th, 9th, and 10th hit.

14. I've always thought it was weird how Bush gestures toward
himself when he says "America". He does it all the time. The part about Bush viewing god, America, and himself as interchangeable made me think of it.

I wonder if that's the sort of thing the doctor was basing his assumptions on?

16. I tried really hard to give Bush the benefit of the doubt on friday
I watched the Reagan service in DC. At first during bush's eulogy I was thinking "well he seems to be doing an okay job". Then as he went on he got that wacked out glare in his eyes, you know they one he gets when he talks about executing people? I wish I could remember at what part of his eulogy he started looking insane. It would be instructive to know.
Maybe I will try to find a copy of it online and see if I can remember.

18. I don't like it when Krauthammer uses his psychiatry background to
"diagnose" Democratic leaders like Al Gore who are not his patient, and I feel uncomfortable for this type of tactic to be used by our side.
