ACTION ALERT! Response from a cinema showing F911
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 10:23 AM by ClassWarrior
Last night I went to the RW web site that lists the various cinemas showing Fahrenheit 911, as well as the ones that haven't yet committed to the film, and sent out thank-you notes to the former and requests to the latter.

I got this email back from one cinema that's planning on showing the film: "Thanks for your support! We need to hear from more of the good guys!"

This is great!! So c'mon "good guys" - get on the stick and start sending thank-yous to the cinemas who have the guts and patriotism to show this important film. The wingnuts have already gathered the addresses and phone numbers for you here:

http://www.moveamericaforward.org/MichaelMoore /

Just scroll past the dribble at the top of the page to get to the list.

And keep this kicked!!

Wow, is this going to backlash on the wingnuts. lol.

I just emailed the two chains near me that are currently undecided and begged them to show it.

102. Check your local listings...
Seriously. It's likely some chain in your area is already planning to show F911. Find their email addresses - either on this list or on your own. Then thank every dang person you can get to with an email, letter, or phone call. And if F911 is not already scheduled in your area, send a polite email, letter, or phone call requesting the movie to every cinema and theater chain in your area.

4. If you have five minutes today
Send an e-mail to any theater chain on the list and THANK THEM for showing this movie. I just called the theater chain that we'll be seeing the movie at a week from Friday; they were very pleased to receive my phone call.

It seems that the kids at moveamericaforward.org have forgotten a very important principle: Make it "forbidden," and people will FLOCK to see it. In the meantime, it's too bad that they have nothing better to do with their time, their lives, their cash, and their bandwidth. If they don't want to see it, DON'T.

5. The Cinemas that do show it are going to make a lot of money
This will probably get quite a bit of media attention (free publicity) as the film starts to open. Those cinemas will get 10,000s of curiosity seekers as well as free minded thinkers that want to see the film

20. That's what I put in my letter to undecideds...
Here's an excerpt from it:

"If for no other reason, show this movie because it will being tons of money into your coffers. There are people SALIVATING to see this film. I know many of them. I can predict that it will be a blockbuster for you. Perhaps not at first, but as word spreads, you will see a phenomenon something like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Word of mouth will keep this film pumped and going for some time. And you can tell your grandkids that you helped to change the course of history by showing it."

7. I called the Carmike phone number and they said they will be making a
decision today or tomorrow. The women (Dot) on the phone was very kind.

In Cedar Rapids, all the theaters showing new films are Carmike so she contacted the booker for this area and they said they are waiting to hear from the Pres. of the Company whether or not they are going to show it.

She did say "down here" (she is in Georgia) they were not going to show it but when I said where I was she checked for me.

The theater closest to my house is a Carmike, so we go there a lot. If they chose not to show this film, I will be taking my business (at $7.75 a pop) somewhere else.

114. Reason Marcus is showing the movie...$$$
they don't want the Rosebud, and Oriental monopolizing on the HUGE interest in this film. Marcus also has a history of legal issues with the Rosebud going back to when the owner bought the building which used to be owned by the Marcus Corp. My rough understanding is that Rosebud couldn't compete with Marcus in the local area on first run films. Fortunately that is no longer an issue per link below. Rosebud will be getting my $$$ too.

19. Great idea & thanks for the tools
Another thing to consider if no one in your area is showing it is to call the local theater and ask if they will -- just to make sure the mgr. there knows how much support there is locally for the film. Also lets them know how much profit they're missing out on. :)

21. Text of letter I just wrote:
To whom it may concern;

I am writing this to express my support for your decision to show the Michael Moore film, Fahrenheit 9-11. If your theater or theater chain has not made this decision yet, I urge you to make this film available to your moviegoing customers. A free society such as ours can only flourish with an open exchange of ideas and opinions. Certainly, whether or not customers wish to spend the price of admission on such a film should be the only factor keeping them from seeing it. Unfortunately, in America, 2004, this is not always the case. It appears that a small group of very vocal extremists has made clear their intent to try to harass and intimidate theater chains that express their intent to make this film available to their patrons. They call Michael Moore "Unamerican"-- as if there is anything "American" about attempts to stifle dissent and free speech. As an American Citizen and an entertainment consumer, I urge you to allow the moviegoing public to decide themselves, and with their ticket-buying dollars. The interest and "buzz" around this film is huge, and there are millions of us who are eagerly looking forward to it's release.

I thank you, again, for your consideration and your service to the public.

23. Is this website a joke?
One of the first lines on that site says:

Michael Moore has attacked our troops, attacked our Commander in Chief and attacked the victims of 9/11 saying: “The passengers on September 11 were scaredy-cats, because they were mostly white.”

I did a google search on that phrase and the only sites that came up were the one that I copied it from, and a site called republicanandproud.com which seems to have merely cut and pasted from the other site. I am certain Michael Moore never said this. Can any legal action be taken against this site?

he repeated an oft-told joke, one I heard many times from many people, that the hijackers would have never made it to the cockpit if there had been a bunch of black, innercity gang-bangers on board.

While I can't agree with borrowing material, I can agree with this hypothesis.

28. libel
Of course, that's a clear-cut case of libel. Michael Moore can sue them, and if they can't prove where they got the quote, then he should be able to win against them.

The one thing I'm not sure of is the standard of proof in US libel suits. I always get mixed up between US and British libel law; in one you merely have to prove that the quote is made-up, whereas in the other you have to prove the person knew it was made-up and used it anyway. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which is which.

The quote itself is such bullshit, anyway. I mean, even if Moore were actually the devil Freepers believe him to be, where in the hell would someone get the idea of saying the "passengers were scaredy cats"? That they even use the quote proves they know it's false or they're just completely stupid (though, it could of course be both...).

29. Thank you for the link!
I emailed National Amusements, which owns the big cinema plex around here and politely asked them if they were planning on showing the film, as it says on the movie website. The righties had them listed as undecided, so I thanked NA for apparently showing it here. So all you eastern Iowa and Western Illinois come on over and watch the movie on June 25 or later, we apparently will have it at Cinema 53 in Davenport! And KICK!:kick:

30. Just sent the following to all the theaters that are showing the film
While browsing the web recently, I ran across a web site that was making a concerted effort to influence the ability of theaters to show Moore's film, through protests, e-mail campaigns, etc. Basically they were in favor of using any method necessary to prevent the public from seeing the information that Moore had to present.

I must say that I am extremely pleased that you, all of you, have the courage and willingness to do what is right and good, and to show this film for those that wish to see it. I see attacks on free speech daily, and your willingness to show such a controversial film despite that controversy is testimony to your integrity.

Thank you for doing that which all Americans should strive to do, to go forward with what you know is right, even in the face of adversity. The e-mails that you will no doubt receive denouncing this film are from those that would prefer that it's information never be highlited and made public. They will be from people who will use empty rhetoric to tear down Moore and his work. They will be attempting to attack Moore as being un-American. But that of course begs the question. . . who is more un-American, one who exercises his rights and engages in legitimate questioning of this administrations policies and plans, or the person who wishes to limit the rights of an individual to pursue those rights guaranteed to all citizens by our Constitution?

Thank you once again for your willingness to show this film, and you have my utmost support in your decision.

38. And maybe we could buy advance tickets.
I got an e-mail from a local cinema concerning including "Fahrenheit 9/11" in their line-up (They send me a list of upcoming films each week). I'm going to have to look into buying advance tickets, especially since this movie is bound to be mobbed in my neighborhood.

By the way, I'd expect protesters, too. The scary people are not going to let this open quietly.

61. Carmike is the only major "undecided" chain
If you click on the different states to see where the film is already booked at: http://www.f911tix.com/ you will see that the following theater chains are all showing it somewhere, in many cases on dozens of screens nationwide.

AMC
Landmark
Angelika
Regal/Edwards
Cinemark
Century
Mann
National Amusements (aka NA)
Crown
Kerasotes
Marcus
Pacific

BTW, I counted up the actual number of theaters listed on the F911Tix site and so far it's only 324. They said that it would open on approximately 500 screens (which is a huge number for a documentary), so I'm sure that ink is still drying on some contracts. Keep in mind they only OFFICIALLY got a distributor (Lion's Gate) less than 2 weeks ago! In many cases, theaters already have all their screens scheduled. This is done months in advance by the film bookers at corporate headquarters.

55. It's working! Keep it up!
I just spoke with the receptionist at Carmike headquarters (Columbus, GA)and she said the company would have a decision by tomorrow, but she felt pretty sure the decision would be in favor of distributing/screening F/911 in its theaters. She said "at first we weren't going to, because there was a lot of controversy about the movie, but now it looks like we are going to go ahead and show it."

She sounded happy about this turn events, though I didn't ask her opinion, and said they were receiving a lot of calls and were keeping a tally of the opinions of those who contacted HQ. I told her I would wait until Wednesday to purchase my tickets (12) at another theater in a different town (not a Carmike property). She said to call back Tuesday for news.

I also called our local Carmike theater (only cinema in town)and made a request for the film to be booked. They were very receptive, as well. I live in a fairly small town in Alabama, and while it is a college town, it is by no means liberal-leaning. Great work, everyone!

62. Personally, I say let's stay positive
JMHO, but let's leave the threats to the neocons. They're already making them. If there are no theaters in your area showing the film, call the theater managers and ask them if they will be. It may just not be on the http://www.f911tix.com/ website yet.

Like my mama always said, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. I mean think about it. Did ANYONE go see "The Passion of the Christ" because the e-mail spam they got - "The Film Hollywood Doesn't Want You to See"? Puhleeez! All that did was make me want to see it less, not to mention that the whole thing was a lie. It was "The Film Hollywood Didn't Want to Finance" because Mel Gibson said he wanted it all in Latin, Aramic and Hebrew and originally wanted NO SUBTITLES. Well you know what? I wouldn't have given him $100 million to make it either!

60. Don't forget
If these groups want to come to the theatre to harass people just coming to watch a movie then they are only hurting theirselves. The movie will get more publicity with the news coverage, especially if there is violence and a few people that have never heard of the movie will want to watch it even more. Like they say there is no bad publicity.

63. Remember "The Blair Witch Project"?
Tons of hype, lines a mile long and FOR WHAT? A stupid movie about some kids that go into the woods without a cell phone and get scared about piles of sticks.

The same goes for "The Last Temptation of Christ", a film based on a NOVEL (not on the Bible) that some people didn't want anyone to see, even though THEY HADN'T SEEN IT THEMSELVES! They might as well look me straight in the eye and say "I don't think you're smart enough to judge for yourself", in which I would have to say, "Oh yeah? WATCH ME!"

I went to see that with a group my from church. We had to walk through a picket line of "Christians" hurling some of the worst insults you have ever heard. Well, the pickets drew HUGE attention to this film, which was really just a B movie. Soon more and more thaters picked it up. All the controversy was the draw.

101. According to TexasBushwacker's excellent research...
...the only real "undecided" any more is Carmike Cinemas. All other major chains are showing it somewhere. So our next plan of action is to shower them all with our undying gratitude and desire to eat popcorn and junior mints so that these chains add even more screens in more areas of the country - especially the states identified by TexasBushwacker in an earlier post.

Great job everyone! Keep showin' the love...

showing Fahrenheit 9/11.

I just bought my ticket for the 715 show on Friday, June 25. I also called the theatre and spoke to the manager and thanked him for supporting free speech. He was totally unaware of any campaign to get theatres not to show the movie. I gave him some background info (on how the same group orchestrated the recall of Gov Gray Davis as well as the same folks who intimidated CBS into not showing the Reagans miniseries). He took down my name and asked me if I was part of an advocacy group. I said no (which is true but I do advocate on the part of free speech) and that I had found out about this on democraticunderground.com. He may look at the site you never know. He thanked me for calling.

St Louisans...order your tix online NOW at

91. Here's what I wrote to Landmark
Dear Landmark Theatres,

Thank you for giving me and others in Milwaukee the opportunity to view Mr. Moore’s new film in your theater. Your decision to show the documentary is a testament to your company’s commitment to free speech. Landmark has shown that whatever political beliefs you might hold, America is a country where you can voice them loudly without intimidation. I am encouraged and I’m heartened. Thank you very much.

thanks! i just rattled off an e-mail to regal cinemas...... local chain. and forwarded it to all the accompanying e-mail addys, with my name attached and region of residence. should mean a little more if they know local business is involved.

reminded me, we still have a drive-in as well..... only other real "independent" theater we have in the region. i'll have to make a phone call there as well. the closest theater showing it i know of is 2 hours away, so, anyone willing to show it nearby is sure to make akilling off not only local patrons but those coming in from elsewhere in the area who can't see it nearby.

95. GOOD NEWS - - - SCREENS ADDED!!!!
Earlier today (Monday) I counted up the theaters on the map for F911 tickets - http://www.f911tix.com/index.html and it totaled 324. Now, as of 8 PM CST, it's up to 374. Over 50 screens added - AND NONE HAVE BEEN DROPPED!

The state of Georgia now has 7 screens!

Texas went up from 27 screens to 32!

Florida went from 8 screens to 23!

Colorado went from 6 screens to 19!

Several states have added 1 to 3 screens also.

The following states however, have NO screens so far:

Idaho
Nevada
Montana
Wyoming
South Dakota
Mississippi
West Virginia
Delaware

If you live in one of these states, it might be time to get on the phone and call the managers at your local theaters, especially if you live in a city of any size whatsoever.

96. Got em all
Sent the following to the ones that were undecided.
We strongly urge you to show Michael Moores film, Fahrenheit 9/11.
You will not only being showing an important film, but performing a patriotic act.
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Patriotism means to stand by the country, it does not mean to stand by the President or any other public official. " ----- Theodore Roosevelt

And thanked the others.

and received answers from about 10 - 9 were out of the office, but Skip Huston @the Avon (?) replied with "You're welcome. Hurray for free speech", so if I don't hear from any others, the one reply was worth the trouble. You rock, Skip.

screens in town (!) except for the Mesilla Film Society's
Fountain Theater.

We won't be seeing it here in Las Cruces. Guy said he wants to make money. Said he was getting calls pro and con, but money is the bottom line. Sort of mocked how few theatres across the country are showing it.

He did tell me that the Fountain is trying to get it, for a September screening...which may not be all that bad since it's just after the GOP convention. That is, unless something goes "suddenly" right for Bushco........

106. Wow. DUers are THE BEST.
After a day of emails, calls and the like, we have gotten something like 50 theaters to add this film, and now NEARLY EVERY MAJOR CHAIN will be screening it somewhere.

Don't let up. Let's get it on more screens in more places - especially those states that haven't committed yet.

Be courteous, thank them for their time, and share the love.

We're making a difference.

107. Carmike Union Strike
This adds an interesting twist to the campaign.

And now, your feature boycott
by Diego Bejarano

Moviegoers attending the premier of the movie Troy at the Carmike Plaza 6 theater in Butte on May 14 were met with a union strike as seven employees staged a walk-out after months of conflict between the union and the theater. The following day, all seven employees were fired. Prior to that mass housecleaning, three other employees had been fired shortly after signing their union cards in April.

Jacquie Helt, executive secretary treasurer of Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees No. 427, based in Missoula, and vice president of the Montana AFL-CIO, says the walk-out sought to draw attention to ongoing labor issues—including wrongful terminations, scheduling and seniority issues, harassment and overall disrespect for employees.

The union began its boycott of the theater with the walk-out, and has carried out information pickets every Friday and Saturday since.

Helt says troubles with the Carmike company go back to last December when 13 union employees were fired on the same day. When issues like termination and disciplinary action arise between union members and the theater, the company, by the terms of its contract with the union, must provide documentation regarding employer grievances. But Helt says theater management has “been blowing off.”

110. The whole Freeper attack made it to VARIETY .....
the leading entertainment industry daily:

ORG IGNITES '9/11' FIGHT
Move America Forward aims to chill doc's B.O. prospects

A conservative group that pressured CBS to cancel "The Reagans"
miniseries last year now is leaning on U.S. theater owners to drop
Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" from their release lineup.

****************************************************

I can't imagine this exposure is good for "Move America Forward". They aren't exactly the movie business's kind of people. It's more likely to stimulate a liberal backlash.

Shelving "The Reagans" was easier because they couldn't threaten to boycott any company that aired a commercial during the broadcast. By the time the show was finished and ready for broadcast, CBS and Fox were having merger talks, so they probably got pressure from Fox as well.

112. WTF? - Number of screens back down
Get those e-mails going again folks. The screens that were added yesterday have suddenly disappeared. I hope that doesn't mean that those 50 new theaters have backed down. Florida is back down to the original 8 screens, with ZERO in Miami. Colorado is back down to 6.

118. I just thanked a good number of the theaters there and...
also sent the following thank-you letter:

============================

I wanted to extend my gratitude for your hard work in gathering all those sites and links related to the upcoming release of Fahrenheit 911. I couldn't have thanked all those theaters without your help.

BTW I'm sure this is just a ploy to generate controversy and interest in getting people to see the film. Very clever.

:)
