Man; my parents' church distributes "pro-life" propaganda
Went to my nephew's baptism last week; while I didn't see it myself, my brother mentioned to me later that, in the main lobby of the church (not sure if "lobby" is the right word; the area just inside the main entrance) has stacks of antiabortion bumperstickers. Not sure exactly was the specific message printed on them, so I don't know if it violates the separation clause.

Maybe I should mail my brother a stack of War is Not the Answer bumperstickers to drop off next to the antiabortion stickers? Say, just before Sunday 12 o'clock mass?

1. As long as they don't support a candidate, they're OK.
Issue advocacy is OK.

8. Bush & Co are working on that - Church support of candidates
They have legislation in the works to allow donations from churches.

2. Isn't this called Free Speech? Not speech you prefer, but
free? I don't understand the issue here.

6. I'd consider it advocacy
as another poster on this thread mentioned, issue advocacy is okay w/r/t the separation clause, but if they're advocating according to the Catholic Church's stances (which--of course--makes sense), shouldn't the antiwar message also be advocated, since the Pope--who, last I checked, was Catholic--denounced the Iraq war?

I know people will say "the Church is just supporting its stance," but the abortion issue has become so politicized that it's hard not to see this as a de-facto endorsement of the Republican party.

9. I'm an ex-Catholic, and I don't agree with the statement that
you can't vote for someone who supports abortion...but I am pro-life.
I don't post that often because it is such a hot topic.
I agree they should have anti war materials. I think you should have found a good source for distributing them, and if not, that's interesting. (Thou shalt not kill. Period. Not, thou shalt not kill except..but..if..when...)

3. I think that is well enough
into the religious arena that separation is not an issue.

5. Since you use the term "mass," you must be talking a Catholic Church.
Nothing political there unless they are pushing candidates. I'm a Catholic and would be considered anti-abortion. What can I say? I think it's a sin. That doesn't mean that it's a legal issue, but rather a moral one.

7. yes, Catholic
I understand that abortion is against Catholic doctrine; see my post above as to why I believe they are selectively boosting Catholic doctrine.
