Anyone see a recent pattern of blaming women for everything?
• Big business screwing the "Little Guy"?
Forget Enron! We got the real culprit, Martha Stewart for you! Y'know? For the Little Guy!

• Corruption in politics?
Hey, it must be Hillary! She's just scheming to take over in 2008!

• Iraqi prison torture scandal?
We just caught the real culprit: Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski! You can all sleep safer that the men are in charge!

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040615/ap_on_re_eu/britain_iraq_abu_ghraib

Not that I'm saying some of these women deserved to be punished. But to drag them out into the spotlight and say we've now fixed the problem really chaps my hide. I mean, we have more and more on Enron's California screw over coming out everyday but no one cares. But they're gonna make damn sure Martha does some time!

5. Not enough money for Social Security and Medicare? Those women who
had abortions didn't create the children to support the older generation's needs with their taxes.

6. I know that women have been blamed for quite a bit.
Edited on Tue Jun-15-04 10:15 AM by gatorboy
It just strikes me odd that suddenly in Politics, Military and Big Business issues, all areas mostly made up of rich and powerful men, that they're dragging out these women as the root to all the evil.

8. Its deliberate.....
Read this. Its rather long, but well worth it, especially for the
insights as to how working class men are being manipulated by the
Right, and women are being subtley blamed for disempowering men.

11. It's the principle of "find some type/class/gender/race" to look down on
If you can get a person to "look down on" some other nation/race/gender/class, then they won't look at you and find out that you are the real enemy.

It distracts people from what's really going on.

12. Great article
I think the "hug the middle" approach worked for Clinton because he could pass as a "good old boy" and had not lost touch with his working class roots.

13. it's NOT a recent pattern, it's an OLD pattern
Women always have been the scapegoat for everything, dating back to Eve eating the apple and such.

14. Not really...
Martha gets more heat because she is a celebrity, and an annoying one at that.

I don't see how Hillary gets blamed for "corruption in politics". The Right have a strange misogynistic obsession with her, obviously...

Iraqi torture? Buck hasn't officially stopped yet, but I think most people think it should stop at Bush. So far Rummy's gotten the most heat, IMO.

So, no, I don't think women are being scapegoated, esp. in the cases you mentioned.

17. Huh?
1. Martha gets more heat because she is a celebrity? What about Ahnold's association with Enron? That story is never in the news and I believe he is quite the celebrity.

2. Iraqi torture? Whose face would you recognize on the street from that? Lyndie's. She is the poster child for the abuses. And the only officer to be blamed is a female General.

3. "Feminazis" are blamed for every ill in our society on a daily basis on the radio. Do you think Rush likes women? Can't seem to stay married to any of them.

4. Martha will probably lose her entire business. I bet Kmart will drop her soon. Meanwhile Ken Lay, the guy responsible for so much economic devastation, affecting millions of pensions...the world's biggest CROOK is sipping bourbon in his Houston penthouse. Fair?

You're right in your recent perception of events.

It's always been that way. IT WAS ALL EVE'S FAULT! And it's been going downhill since then.

I think history pretty much goes like this:

Develop fire,
Develop wheel
Oppress/blame women
Develop nylon pantyhose

Damn, I feel a case of the vapors developing, I guess I shouldn't have raised my voice.

20. bush administration women
were deliberately put in positions where they would be responsible for implementing some of the nastiest policies:

Ann Venneman - USDA - adulterating the nation's food supply... mad cow not reported.

Christie Todd Witman - EPA - adulterating the nation's environment

Linda Chao - Labor - hurting the working man/woman

What Harry Belafonte said about Powell and Rice being house niggers who serve only at the sufferance of their master and stay in the big house as long as they do his will, could be said about these women as well.

Stooges... Done deliberately so that we couldn't attack all of them and clean house.

Rowland in CT has been trying to blame his wife, too
Well, not him directly... but a few minions of our illustrious governor have floated that out there - Johnny Boy's wife is demanding and got all these special favors and used her influence over the governor, etc, etc.

I don't think it's flying... but, they did float the idea.

The lie that Valerie Plame was not an agency operative for the study of WMD but was instead, a clerk.
Of course! She's a woman so she must have been a clerk!
