Raygun Repugnican Vs. Bunnypants Repugnican...Let The Games Begin
I just caught the tail end of a report where it looks like the wingnuts are gonna go after Ron Reagan for his well-deserved shot at the Bush cabal at his father's funeral. The story was framed with "Reagan has been known to have "liberal" leaning" and mentioned his Salon article where he takes a good shot at Boy Blunder. Of course any criticism of his royal Assholiness is viewed by some as herasy...even from the son of their departed St. Raygun. Well, some of them.

One of the byproducts I'm starting to notice in the wake of the Raygun funeral/pageant is a schism between those who call themselves "Raygun Republicans"...going as far to giving whatever "credit" this regime has taken to the effects of the 1980s. Forget that there was a recession in the early 90's, the "Raygun boom" lasted through 2000 and is starting up again. Or, you'd think the Berlin Wall fell while Raygun was in office...it happened on Poppy's watch. I started seeing an obvious fracture in the "big tent" between those Raygun and Bush camp and I see this report as making this gap wider.

It's no surprise that real Conservatives...smaller government, pro-business and stay outta my business aren't too happy with this regime (watch Lou Dobbs to get a healthy dose of that contempt) and then listen to the former Raygun officials who have either been silent on supporting Bunnypants or second guess the regime by saying how they think Raygun would have handled it. It's the big story of last week many of us didn't pay attention to thanks to the overload of coverage...but it's starting to look very interesting now and for the rest of the campaign.

The part of the news story that was most intriguing was the hint that Nancy will soon be coming out strongly in favor of stem cell research and won't hold back on criticizing the Bush regime. Also expect Patti, whose not quite the free-lovin' "liberal" she once was, to join in the support of her mother and brother...and with it will come out even more of the contempt this family has developed for the Bush clan.

While I'm not ready to forget the goofiness and downright selfish nature of Nancy during her White House years (Just Say No???), having been through Altzheimers with my mother, I can strongly relate to the personal loss she's gone through and the anger and frustration it brings on...especially to those who you think are taking advanatage of your loved one. Fortunately, Nancy didn't let things at the parts of the funeral she controlled (the stuff in California) turn into a political rally like we saw in DC, and you could just tell as the week went along how the family was getting more iritated with being used for Bunnypant's re-selection. When Ron took his shot at the very end, you could tell from the sound of his voice that he not only spoke for himself, but for his mother and sister...and I get a feeling even for his father. Remember how Goldwater mellowed in his last days?

I'd love to see the wingnuts go after Ron. He's not only a big boy, he's fun to watch chew 'em up and spit 'em out. If I'm not mistaken, he's still under the employ of MSNBC to be a studio talking head during the upcoming conventions and election...a great podium to shoot back from. Patti has a book coming out before the election, too...along with a tour. Ah, things could get quite interesting.

Yep, I'll admit a degree of gloating here, but why not? Maybe this will be the catalyst the Repugnican party will need to start the long-overdue housecleaning in that den of corruption. While I hope, and continue to work hard, to make sure that message is driven home with a resounding defeat in November, I'll take whatever amusements along the way.

A fun game I suggest to fellow DU'ers when you confront Repugnicans...ask 'em which type they are...a Raygun Repugnican or a Bushbot. I think the responses could be lots of fun to see.

Cheers and to Ron Regan...get out the hammer!!! :yourock:

2. If I met GW, I would tell him...
"I knew Ronald Reagan, Ronald Reagan was my Commander in Chief. You, deserter, are no Ronald Reagan. Hell, I knew George H.W. Bush, he was also my Commander in Chief, and you are no George H.W. Bush!"

Of all the presidents in my lifetime, I must rank GWBush 2nd lowest, right above Nixon. But only because Nixon had all of his crimes confirmed. Give GW time, I'm sure his rank will drop below Nixon's.

3. oh, i really like that!
"are you a reagan repub or a bush repub?" asked innocently, of course. and then when they answer both, hit them with the differences, than ask them to choose again. btw, does anyone have a simple comprehensive list of the differences?

4. While I have no proof of this, I'd bet Ron Junior made sure his mom
knew of his remarks - either in full detail, or the general nature of them, and approved. No way on earth ANY of Reagan's children would have said ANYTHING to dishonor or embarrass their mother last week. I'm guessing that, sometime during that week, knowing what was scheduled for Friday, Ron turned to his mom and either showed her his notes, or a prepared script, or talked with her at some length about his feelings and what he wanted to say. I'd bet on it. I'm sure Patty and Michael did the same. There was JUST NO WAY any one of them was going to say something she'd find offensive or objectionable. ESPECIALLY not under those circumstances. Besides, by then, the individual members of that greatly dysfunctional family had long since patched things up with each other. And no way are they gonna desert her now, either.

What I think we can correctly and fairly infer is that all of them, especially Ron, gave voice to feelings Nancy shared, and maybe even felt rather strongly about. I think they spoke for her, and perhaps even gave voice to specific things she wanted to have said, but wouldn't say herself, in her place as the nonspeaking widow. More power to her - and to them.

Wouldn't it be sweet irony if THAT turned out to be Reagan's most long-lasting legacy - a rebirth of liberal thought and action, and a resurgence of liberal power - led by his own son and namesake. Ron Junior for national office!

5. I'll Bet Everyone Knew But Michael
We couldn't help but chuckle here during the coverage at how Michael was treated like the "me, too, kid". Now I have sympathy for the rotten life this guy started out with...hell, the maid had better living conditions than he did...but not since he's tried to milk his father's name for personal gain...and he did so after his father's health began failing. We kept calling him "Fredo" all week and warned him not to get into any small fishing boats.

I'm certain not only did Nancy know what Ron was going to say, but you could see how tight she, Patti & Ron are...especially during the past couple years. The timing was just so exquisite for Ron's remarks...the final word on this whole pageant.

What I am curious to see now is if Ron or someone else in the family bothers to respond to Bunnypant's flippant remark today back at the Reagans. I don't think this is the Raygun legacy Rove was hoping to work with.
