US Post Office joins the Neu-Reich: Media Mail to be opened

I found out today that no Media Mail packages will be accepted at the post office if they're unopened. Each item must be verified as truly media before the package can be sealed up and mailed at the media rate.

This is bad news for book, record and video sellers. We either have to bring all our packing supplies to the post office and seal everything up there, or not use the Media Mail rate, which will result in a higher charge for S&H since Parcel Post or Priority are much higher than Media. This will have a negative effect on sales.

My buddy at the post office told me to complain bitterly -- he's not happy about it either, as he really doesn't want to have to inspect packages.

1. This has to be a recent ruling.

Ask your friend at the post office to cite the reg, and the date of change. That might help everyone get the PO off the dime on this one.

If it will keep the rates down, i have no problem with confirmation I'm shipping books and not plastic car parts.

The price break is to increase access to media (a rare subsidy for the arts and intellectualism)
