Boom. Gail Sheehy just said that American Airlines knew at 8:43
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 12:19 PM by AP
that there was a violent hijack by middle eastern men who were in the cabin with pepper spray and were killing people on 9/11.

The 9/11 families heard the tape of the call that AA got from a passenger. They heard AA's response: "let's keep this tight."

AA didn't pass the information on.

The families were sworn to secrecy, but they've been talking. The NY Observer will publish a story about this. Sheehy just reported it on Pacifica.

And so American wants to turn over MORE responsibilities to the private sector? We want profit-motivate corporations to making decisions like this for us?

2. How very un-American of American Airlines
They should have told Norad, and I think they should be punished for not doing so.

Even so, Norad should have figured it out on its own shortly therafter.

3. I am not normally one to defend corporations
But this could be interpreted another way. It could be a call to not panic and keep the operation tight. Believe me I would like nothing more than finding some more kindling to throw on the bonfire for Corporations. Just not sure this qualifies.

14. If someone calls and reports a crime, a private company shouldn't be able
to sit on the information until they're convinced it won't hurt their stock price.

They had an obligation to tell the government.

And look what happened because they didn't.

This might have been the difference between life and death for the people in the WTC.

4. AAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhkkkkkkk!
Are you kidding me? How could they be sworn to secrecy? Why would they not speak before this? Are you saying that American Airlines kept this secret from the government?
I am so jaded that not much blows my mind but this is doing it.
Please explain more to me about this. My feeble brain is not taking it in.

13. is that it? I don't understand how they could make that choice
But I am not in their shoes so I will try not to judge. I am just grateful they are speaking now.

15. American Airlines isn't speaking. They tried to keep it quiet then and now
They swore the families to secrecy.

It's the families who are talking.

5. I will try to find a link, but...
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 12:36 PM by skypilot
...it was reported that the air traffic controllers actually knew at about 8:21am that Flight 11 had been hijacked. If anyone else can find a link quicker than I can, please post it.

On edit: Well, here is one that puts the time at 8:28am. It's not the one I was looking for but it will have to do for now.

At 8:28 the radar showed the jet veer south. The Monitor reports: "The plane turned , and then they heard the transmission with the terrorist in the background....The voice upset because he knew right then that he was working a hijack. Several other people heard the voice, and they could tell by the sound of it, intuitively, that this was a bad situation."

10. Letting the arilines run security is how this happened in the first place
Sorry that is the bottom line. CIA/FAA/FBI whatever-if they had trained (more than an hour) people there the gas masks in the carryon luggage just might have caught someone's attention.

The TSA was created to take security away from the airlines who OBVIOUSLY had tried to do it on the cheap and let several thousand people die. There I said it.
