op/ed: Achcroft the worst attorney general in US history

For this column, let's just focus on Mr. Ashcroft's role in the fight against terror. Before 9/11 he was aggressively uninterested in the terrorist threat. He didn't even mention counterterrorism in a May 2001 memo outlining strategic priorities for the Justice Department. When the 9/11 commission asked him why, he responded by blaming the Clinton administration, with a personal attack on one of the commission members thrown in for good measure.

1. Geez, it's really hard to be worse than John Mitchell or Ed Meese
But Ashcroft has done it, I guess.

2. Paul Krugman is the best columnist at the NYT.
He's been the most consistent at calling out this administration on their every crime. And as he's a Princeton professor of economics, his columns on the state of our economy are hard to refute. Not that it matters. The Repugs just keep repeating their voodoo bullshit. But Krugman is always there to call them on it.

4. I keep thinking this, especially John Mitchell
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 01:59 PM by Gman
and, for those of us that were around when Mitchell was AG, it simply is unthinkable for anyone to be worse, and here it is.

I'll forever think John Mitchell had his wife, Martha, killed. It was only a matter of months between the time she was suddenly diagnosed with an aggressive, incurable cancer and the time she died. Martha made no more middle of the night calls to journalists to spill her guts on everything she knew about something.

Don't ever think Bushco wouldn't stoop that low. They would and it would be far worse.
