A friend just told me that Kerry must stop fund raising
after July 26 *and* that all funds raised through July
26 must be spent entirely by midnight July 26. I hope
this is wrong- pls comment.

After he accepts the nomination federal funding kicks in.

5. He gets $75 million from the feds
to run his campaign after the convention.

This why there was a flap a few weeks ago over the possibility of Kerry accepting the nomination later, so he could the money he raised for the five weeks between the DNC and GOP conventions. Because now, Bush will be able to use the funds that he personally raised all through August, while Kerry must use his federal funds.

4. Well given that the AFL CIO
Has just spent 45 million dollars in the two months alone, I dont think he has much to worry about. This is the largest sum spent by a union on a political campaign in history, and that is lookiing at sums spent for the entire campaign period, not just a few months. And that was just from the AFL-CIO central organizational fund for political campaigns. This doesnt include money that the 60 or so member unions of the AFL-CIO, who have all endorsed Kerry.

Kerry has raised a bit over 100 million and has to spend it by the time of the convention, and after that he is limited to the 75 million limit. But the unions can crank it up and from what I am hearing, they plan to spend more than Bush can raise to campaign all over the country, but primarily in the battleground states. The unions can spend much more to send members from door to door to stump for Kerry after the conventions and Kerry can conserve his 75 million for the last month or so of the campaign. This is ne of the reasons that Kerry threw out the idea of not accepting the nomination, as a number of organizations indicated that they wll provide more than enough pro-Kerry activity, and a great deal of anti-Bush commercials during the 6 weeks between the Democratic and Republican conventions to prevent Bush from taking advantage of the interim period.

6. Of course those unions and other groups can not coordinate their efforts
with the campaign.

8. Yep. That's why the delayed nomination acceptance trial balloon
got floated. He'd have five extra weeks to fundraise if he didn't take the nomination in Boston.

The downsides to that avenue, though, are far worse.
