Do you personally know a "conservative" Democrat?
I'm not talking about politicians, who have to be pragmatic, but rank and file folks. Do any of you know a real life conservative Democrat? I'm just wondering how many of these actual people exist in the electorate that senators like Zell Miller say they are representing.

1. Brad Carson of Oklahoma is as right wing as any repug
Brad Carson of Oklahoma, touted as the Democrats best chance in a Senate pickup is so right wing, a local chapter in eastern Oklahoma of the KKK has endorsed him alone with the NRA.

2. Yes, I do
My uncle (mother's brother) and my brother. My uncle was a cop for 40 years and just retired.

Both have the same general idea that without a stable, affluent working and middle class, morality decays and misery spreads. The Republicans don't want that kind of society because they want to make themselves the Lords of the Earth; Democrats do because they believe in freedom.

Both are devout Roman Catholics, and neither think the "under God" fracas is anything other than a Republican trick.

3. In the Southeast
there are a lot of conservative Democrats. Some Democrats from the South are far more conservative than some Republicans from the Northeast. I think Miller is on target here.

4. Depends on what issues you are talking about.....
I know many dems with downright conservative views on certain issues. But I don't know any like Zell who are conservative in every single view but still call themselves dems.

6. There are a lot of us, and we aren't like Zell.
Old timers (like me) who are basically party loyal. Rarely if ever vote for a Republican. As my dad said about voting for McGovern, "Just hold your nose and pull the lever".

7. Actually,anyone who thinks Repugs are conservative are just....
plain wrong. A true conservative wants clean air, clean water, and clean environment in general over helping corporation make as much money as possible. A true conservative wants a fair market place. A true conservative wants a stock market that isn't rigged. A true conservative believes in a living wage for American workers. A true conservative doesn't believe in lying to the American people in order to go to war to pay back your political backers.
Actually I consider myself conservative. The reason I support Dems is that I know the fascist Republican party is the worst thing possible for America....plain and simple they are Nazi's...I mean that whole-heartedly...I'm not just using that as a putdown to upset them...THEY ARE NAZI'S.

I believe in the draft. I am against gays adopting children (but not against gay civil unions). I want discipline back in schools. I want college exam results with full scholarships to be the SOLE criteria for entrance. Not money, not race, not gender. I want to see unions return to their former power. At the same time I want universal health care. I believe in a woman's right to choose. I want to see total equality of education and health care throughout the States. I want a law that ties CEO compensation to the minimum wage. I want TOTAL separation of Church and State. I want a progressive tax structure. And I never again want to see all four branches of government in the hands of ANY single party.

12. Yes -
from South Texas - She is against abortion, but not defined by law - only morality and education. She is pro union and pro universal health care. She is for no discrimination, including against the majority (that's here wording). She is conservative and has never cast a Republican vote. Oops - and she is also for prayer in schools (that's where we really split).

13. Yes.
I consider most of the dems I know locally to be conservative. I live in a very conservative area; here, to be a democrat is a bold, progressive thing. Even if you are politically conservative, and those I know are.

I've also "met" some democrats here at DU I would categorize as "conservative."

And I know many republicans who "ought" to be democrats to match what they value in life; but they're not. They vote republican for 2 reasons: defense spending, and faith. We live in an area heavily dependent on the defense industry for jobs, and their churches and church leaders preach republican.

In my experience, DU is much farther left than the average Democrat on the street.

16. My DH and I are
fiscal conservatives, and social liberals.

I want as little of my money as possible spent as efficiently as possible on the social programs I think are necessary and good.

17. The South is full of them ...
which, like Zell says, the rest of the party ignores at its peril -- and, by the way, at the bidding of the Conservatives. It is in the Conservatives' interest that the party be divided, so they encourage such division by using stooges like Zell, who ought to know better. When the liberal wing of the party brooks no dissent on what issues are and aren't "democrat" they are falling right into the hands of the Republican strategists on K Street -- and THEY certainly ought to know better. Karl Rove is leading them (and us) by the nose and we should stop him.

There's only one issue that any Democrat ought to be concerned with and that is the threat posed by Conservativism. The Republican party -- which once contained patriotic, loyal opponents -- is now infested with a fundamentalist, militant anti-progressive movement. To us, then, who believe in the Constitution and freedom, there is no greater imperative than to destroy Conservativism and erase this virulent strain which, for over 200 years, has been fighting against progressive, Enlightenment-republicanism (small r).
