Russia was against the Iraq invasion! They had helped arm Saddam in the first Gulf War and their weapons were no match for the US and its allies. It was immediately after that the the Soviet Union collapsed. Putin wants to rebuild the once powerful empire. It's to his advantage to have an American president preoccupied elsewhere while the Big Bear tries to reload its arsenal. I would not trust Putin. He was once head of the KGB and much brighter and devious than George W Bush. Yes, he would like George W Bush for four more years, I do not doubt.

3. free hand in Chechnya...
don't forget about that. The atrocities we're seeing in Iraq are reminiscent of what Russian troops have done to civilians in Chechnya. Putin has cast this as part of the "war on terror" and has gotten the green light from Bush to do whatever the hell he wants regardless of rules of war.

Remember, they are soul mates in more ways than you can imagine.

8. I am sure Putin would have given his left nut, if necessary,
to get someone as dumb as Shrub and his minions in office,
and he would then give up the right one to keep them there.
