On edit: let me clarify this for people. I don't give a shit about her out-rating Rush Limbaugh or anybody else (even though she's not head-to-head with Limbaugh in his timeslot anyway). What pisses me off is that it is DISRESPECTFUL to other liberal radio hosts who do a pretty damn good job in other time slots and other markets.

It has already been established that AirAmerica is the most streamed broadcast so Rhodes definitely wins in the ratings on that front.

When IEAmerica Radio folded, Thom Hartmann went to a number of stations that were carrying the IEA feed and approached them about still carrying the show. The Hartmanns actually bought sattelite time in order to provide the stations (less than a dozen at the time) with their show.

I do know that he was picked up by a Clear channel station in Minnesota, and that they were recently added to cable TV networks around the country - he's available on quite a few cable TV outfits, I'm told.

TBTM really enjoyed working with Thom and Louise. Good people.

But realistically - Thom has not been doing radio as long as Randi, and her ratings speak for themselves. If Hartmann were number one in any MSA, I've honestly never heard about it.

32. You have to be opinionated to be successful on talk radio and

to be able to tout your beliefs to the masses you have to have a strong sense of self or the callers or guests or your echo will get the best of you, so yes, you have to have a large ego to be successful. Often Franken is too quiet in his presentation and he can get off in a boring tangent that makes me want to turn him off. I remind myself that he is working on developing his radio self and to give him time.

Randi Rhodes was sharing her knowledge of the video of GW listening to those school kids reading after the first tower was struck long before Franken referenced it. When he first talked about it with such surprise and indignation I thought, Randi has been saying that for months.

Like everything else we discuss here, it is a matter of taste.

with only 14 stations, has more listeners than Fox radio, with over 600 stations. She is just excited that the ratings are so good for all of the talk jocks at Air America and she has congratulated Franken and the others.

on Sirius. Both begin at 9 for me. I alternate listening to #125 (Air America, 24/7), and #143 (Sirius Left - Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, the Young Turks, etc.). I listen to them all. Sometimes I'm in a Rhandi mood, and sometimes, I'm in more of an Ed mood. Everybody gets listened to during th week sometime. We have to support our hosts.

Given all the raves by fellow DUers I have been listening to her on AAR lately (about 2 weeks now). I thought she was quite good yesterday, discussing the 911 timeline and the relative role of NORAD, FAA, Air traffic controllers. She really seemed to have done some homework on that, which is NOT always the case I'm finding....

I again have to preface any further comments with the fact that I want to like her. I really, really WANT to like her. But, she does not make it easy. And in the interest of "total truth in posting," I think I am often guilty of some of the same things I'm finding so irritating in her! Ahh, the ironies of life...

Lest you misunderstand, it is not that I'm that put off by her abrasive nature. She's impassioned. She's an assertive professional woman... So am I. Still, she so often jumps to conclusion, cuts off her callers without even 15 seconds to hear what it is they are saying, refuses to listen to a point they called to make (which are quite often complementary to those she made, but point out a different angle) and won't allow herself to be corrected, even when she is obviously in error. That she does this with her invited "expert" guests is even more frustrating to me, as they have the scoop that I, the listener am anxious to hear. With guests, one would think she would defer a bit, perhaps? But, I think ego is her own worse enemy...(again, I see a bit of me in her there, so I am being honest at least...)

Bootom line, I'll apply a bit of self-critique from my reaction to her to my own behavior (which is a benefit, in and of itself), but I think I'll listen to Franken and Janine G a bit more and RR quite a bit less....I'll still listen occasionally, but only occasionally...Flame away my fellow DUers who may be devout fans of RR, but I suspect I am not the only one who feels this way...

I think I am often guilty of some of the same things I'm finding so irritating in her!

I agree that she could be a better listener and she could take those different prisms from the spectrum that her callers give her and synthesize and summarize them. That would truly be a service to her audience.

But nobody's perfect. I pride myself on being a nasty bitch with a mouth so of course Randi is de riguere for me. An issue isn't fully fleshed out in my mind until I can hear Randi rant about it. I couldn't wait until I heard her take on the 26 diplomats on Wednesday and I was so disappointed that she stubbed her toe while tipsy and trying to get into bed. So she couldn't make the show but she did make up for it the next day by discussing it pretty thoroughly. I also think it's great that she didn't feel the need to lie about how she demolished her toe. LOL.

Randi's an acquired taste, kind of like arugula rustica. Hang in there and you may find a new appreciation for her.
