So Saddam was drawing up his own plans which seem to me to be his right as a sovereign leader of a sovereign nation as awful as he was and is. So can't the Russia communique' be interpreted another way?

1. Very good point.
What do you want to bet that we'll never see any documentation of Putin's alleged "warning"? Just like we'll never see Cheney's special super secret "evidence" of the Iraq/Al Qeada link...

2. I think Putin's "convenient" notice of this warning to the US

re: Iraq and plan for attacks on US NEVER OCCURRED. The newspaper summaries from Slate this morning has the following tidbits:

Everybody mentions Russian President Putin's statement Friday that Russia gave the White House reports indicating that Saddam Hussein was readying terrorist attacks against Americans—but Reuters is reporting that State Department officials have never heard of these reports. The Post finds a senior U.S. intelligence official who's also unaware of "any specific threat information." A Russian political analyst said the timing of the statement was likely meant to help Bush win re-election: "We've always had good relations with Republicans. We dislike Democrats, because Democrats always care about democracy in Russia," she told the LAT."
