Just got word I've been threatened again - this time on DU

Thanks to a good person here on DU, I've just found out that I have been threatened again by a Republican psychotic who apparently wants physical harm to come to me because I plan to see Farenheit 9/11 this coming Friday.

I won't get into the details because there may be a law enforcement effort underway, but I can count this as yet another random threat from a possibly armed Republican psychotic who would rather threaten people with violence than tolerate civilized debate or political dissent.

I wrote columns for "Creative Loafing" newspaper in Atlanta for 5 years, and in that time, I received 24 death threats, several promising to kill not only me, but my wife and kids as well. Two of the threats mentioned my kids by name, as well as my home address. One of the senders is currently residing in the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Georgia.

Look folks, I can appreciate that I'm a little rough on right wingers, and that I'm not exactly diplomatic in my approach to their hypocritical worldview. But threatening my kids with death? 24 times?

My God. What has this nation come to?

I never wanted or expected this. But THIS is what the Republican party has wrought upon the United States of America.

If you dissent in modern America, you run the risk that you and your spouse and children will be threatened with death.

that you seem to have an awful lot of anger built up (not necessariy unexpected from what you allude to that you've been putting up with). Nonetheless, I get this sense that you've taken all you can and unless you get it out in some way, there could be at least a "metaphorical explosion"--perhaps with unintended consequences.

That you knew and liked Zell Miller and have seen his betrayal to all that you both held dear at least at one time, that you have faced personal significant attack and harm from the RW in your work (CL) and perhaps other areas of your life--all this I've gathered from your posts. As one who personally reached a breaking point during previous residency in Atlanta--from what I'll euphemistically term a significant political and "philosophical" mismatch-- I think I am reading familiar emotion within your posts. Perhaps you need to find a venue to vent these feelings, or even consider relocating.

I personally worry that you could react strongly (and perhaps dramatically out of proportion) to an event because you have had so many escalating and building "triggers." Take care, and be careful, ok?

to you or any of your family, your first action is to inform law enforcement.

Unfortunately, I have little or no fear from these blowhards, regardless of what they say; however, if you feel threatened, like I said, get in touch w/law enforcement. You have the right and obligation to protect your family, but you must use your best judgement after all other options are exhausted.

Be wary of discussing legal issues on a public forum.

And remember, most of these people are 2 cent cowards and merely talk up a storm.

I am very afraid that we have come to a crossroads in our country where we have to realize that standing up for democtratic principals and what is right, just might mean that you are actually fighting in a little 'war' of your own. Not that it's ever been safe to do that, many people throughout the history of our country have been killed for doing just that. But in this day and age, the sickness of these people can be triggered just by exercising the basic freedom this country was founded upon, the First Amendment, the right of free speech. There is a good reason that this was the first right outlined in the Bill of Rights. It was so important to the founders of this country that people understand that in order to be a truly free society, we had to allow for differences of opinion and the right to express them. But some people live in such a miasma of hate and fear that any opinion contrary to their own frightens and threatens them to their very soul. And that is what drives them, their hate and their fear.

I read your post earlier about Costa Rica. I lived there and was once married to a Tica. Costa Rica es bien pura vida, but another poster made good points. If it ain't nailed down, it WILL be stolen. Ever notice how everyone has bars on all their windows? When I lived in Guanacaste, we didn't have bars on the windows, but someone always had to stay home or we had big dogs in the yard.

If you own a car, you MSUT lock it behind bars in the driveway or else it will be vandalised. But the crime, as you say, is petty and generally non-violent. Now, here in New Orleans it's a different story. I definately think CR is safer than the USA!

I recieved a virus that destoyed my Hard Drive. It came from a Net Site that I trusted so I foolishly opened the attach. I know that it didn't come from the trusted place that the email stated that it did. That was before I learned how devious some people can be.I lost everything on that Hard Drive and had to install another one. Now that is minor compared to other possible things that could happen. Being careful and not dismissive of threats is highly advisable.

I kept it but I installed a better one with around 60x the space. Now I do not open any attach. before I contact the sender and I installed a firewall and a virus protection program. ;) Still, I am careful. It would take a lot for me to buy a pistol. Maybe a trained bobm sniffing,attack dog. I did once get a phone call about someone planting a bomb under my house that was going to off in few minutes. The caller said that and hung up. It of course, didn't go off but I did a full search for it.That was scary. That event wasn't connected with politics but a personal dispute. I figured out who that was and sent over a huge friend of mine to explain to that person that he should not pursue his vendeta. All threats ceased but I checked for bombs for days and weeks afterward. I did move to another section of the country soon afterward, not related to that situation though.
