Get rid of DeLAY -- Chris Bell Op-Ed is a window of opportunity for us..
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 04:42 PM by lostnfound
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/editorial/outlook/2637619">US Rep Chris Bell's opinion piece, "DeLay Undermines Small 'd' Democracy" in today's Houston Chronicle says that "in plain English, he sold legislation and illegally doled out "corporate welfare" at taxpayer expense".

It starts off by saying that "U.S. Majority Leader Tom DeLay is the most corrupt politician in America."

And it also points out that DeLay and his associates have launched personal attacks and threats of political retribution against Bell and his colleagues to deflect attention away from the charges.

NOW IS THE TIME to help Chris Bell to weaken or dismantle DeLay and his disgusting fascist apparatus. TIMING IS EVERYTHING..something the right-wing attack machine knows better than we do.

Here's some ideas:
1. Write a LTTE to the Chronicle (or other papers) in agreement with Bell's position or pointing out the depth of DeLay's treachery.

2. Write to your congressmen demanding an official investigation into DeLay's illegal behavior.

3. Try to find out what corporations have benefitted from DeLay's corrupt legislative actions, and shine a spotlight on them through LTTE's or other actions.

4. Write to clean-government / activist organizations to encourage them to be vocal on this issue and issue some press releases.

5. Organize an event to protest DeLay?

1. Unfortunately

Delay will probably get reelected even if he gets indicted.

I talked with an old friend Friday night at the Texas Democratic Convention and told him that Delay's November Democrat opponent, Morrison, seemed to have turned out a lot of people at the convention and they had a lot of enthusiasm. I asked my friend if Morrison had any chance to beat Delay. My friend told me that, just like the old saying, if Delay were to be caught in bed with a dead woman or a live boy AND get indicted, Morrison MIGHT get 45% to Delay's 55% of the vote. He said the people in that district just love Delay that much and will vote for Delay no matter what.

2. Golly, I heard just the opposite at the convention.
I heard that he is not well liked in his district, mainly because he doesn't do anything for it.

His opposition to mass transit funding doesn't help him either.

Add to that the fact that Galveston has been added to his district, and I think you have a slightly more liberal makeup of people in his district.

3. I met someone from Galveston, who told me the section added
to his district, around Hitchcock, is highly democratic.

5. I overlooked saying that
my old friend does a lot of heavy campaign consulting and has been involved in the past in recruiting Democratic candidates for Texas congressional offices. So to clarify, my friend, IMHO, knows what he's talking about.

On the other hand, I've heard the anecdotal evidence you mention that Morrison can win. I hope its true. Nevertheless, I wrote Morrison a check at the convention because anyone that can be a thorn in Delay's side deserves every chance and all the money he can get.

6. The problem with Hitchcock is that

no one that can vote lives there. In other words, the population in Sugarland/Rosenberg is a lot more dense and that's where they love Delay.

Now, if greyhounds in Hitchcock could vote... (for everyone scratching their heads: Gulf Greyhound racetrack is in Hitchcock.)

4. I also heard the opposite
when i asked morrison supporters if there was a realistic chance of defeating delay, i was told that delay's poll numbers right now are in the 35%-38% range. that's a lot of pissed off people.
