2. If you're the buyer, it's great.
If you're the seller, not so great.

They're reliable and consistent (and, I presume, secure.) But sellers are presumed to be liars, and buyers can take advantage.

7. I can't fucking stand it
Everytime I use it I have to call a tech support person and have them show me how to adjust my cookies. Then what I ordered (Motorhead T-shirt) took three months to arrive.

when you ordered the motorhead shirt you didn't order it from pay pal. The reason it came so late rests solely on the other party. Pay pal is just a safe third party that you can send your credit card info to in order to send money to others. (so you don't have to give it to a stranger)

This is like me sending you a check for $50 to buy a video card then me complaining about my bank when it takes you 3 months to send it to me.

30. not necessarily
if there is a "problem" paypal will not approve the transaction, if they did not correct whatever the situation was, it very well could have taken months before paypal gave the ok to the seller to ship.

31. Don't do it....
there are all kinds of reasons to not use them, the first and foremost being that they're owned by Ebay.

8. only positives....
not crazy about paying fees....but it is a service and cheaper than having to buy credit card machines and accounts and all that... so from a business stand point it was great....

for sending to a seller....I never had a problem...but I have heard you are not protected the same from your credit card as you would be with a direct merchant.....

I have not used in over a year...so some rulings may have changed...red their site ask questions...and ask your credit card company questions.....

I have used it with sending funds from checking and to checking....

more secure than others ways....

Yahoo had a method at one time....but most people have pay pal...

Takes a little bit to set up...because of the assurances they go through to set it up....they deposit some funds...you have to verify what amounts those were....and you have to have a checking account...

so it was safe and find for me....

I did once get an email from a SPOOFer that looked exactly like paypal screen saying I needed to update my information and asking me to re fill in everything....but my 'fraud' antenna went up... I notified them.... they did n't handle it correctly right away..but then realized what was going on.....and sent out a note to everyone ....and after that.... other places were sending out notes about the 'fraud' ....so ebay .... who ever was trying to spoof the sites... was doing it to a lot of them....

so caution is always a good thing....

if you have a doubt...go with it and check it out...
I once did not send money to a ebayer because instinct said wait.. I just kept emailing....and eventually send a not to ebay company that I had not had a response so I was NOT sending the money... eventually someone went after him because several people did not receive the computer... and eventually the fbi or some fraud police got involved and followed up with any one who might have bee defrauded by this person...

long explanation ...but my experiences....

9. Most of the time they're OK. Lots of people are signed up with
them, so as a seller you're doing OK. If you sell on Ebay, Paypal is good. If you're selling from a web site, you should get credit card processing.

There have been problems with Paypal. I had an account with them. I had my purse robbed and had to cancel credit cards and shut down my checking account. I told them that. They then froze my account until I provided my drivers license and credit card bills! Then they stopped funds on someone I was paying and held if frozen! By the time I got a new drivers license, i could care less.

Another time I was paying someone for something and they froze the transaction. He had to provide all kinds of information to prove he was who he said he was, even though he had the account for years. After three weeks of going back and forth, he refused the payment and I used Yahoo pay direct.

Then there was Whatreallyhappened.com. People were sending them money and they just canceled their account because they were - basically - anti-Bush. When WRH did some research and found that a lot of porn sites use Paypal - against their policies - Payal was embarassed. They eventually got their account back and Paypal got rid of the porn sites.

When things go wrong, Paypal is very hard to work with. And they have no rhyme or reason when they make decisions.

10. i refuse to use it
i've heard lots of horror stories about them, including activist type organizations that rely on donations, who had their entire paypal accounts balance frozen for an excessivly long time, even though the disputes were only for a relatively small amount.

nevermind that they are owned by ebay, who think little of your individual rights.

Best way to pay. Seller gets paid immediately and can send item out right away (maybe).

Never had a problem in 4 years on Ebay.

On edit: that last poster jumped mine.

14. PayPal
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 04:57 PM by satellitesister
I've been using PayPal since 1999 and never had a problem. I've use it all that time on eBay and now I offer it as a payment option on an online store in addition to cc processing. No problems.

As for eBay- they've been pissing me off lately. The last few times I went there I was assaulted with a popup ad from eBay but they were advertising a big name store that was selling its' products on eBay. WTF? If I wanted a big name store, I'd go to a big name store's website and pay friggen retail. I just thought that was pretty obnoxious. It defeats the purpose of eBay.

Just my two cents.

On edit: I receive many "spoof" emails that claim to be, and look very much like, they are from PayPal. The email requests that I click a link and "update" all my "account information", including credit card, SSN and bank information. The worst part is that this link opens a window which which appears to use the real "http://www.PayPal.com/" web address. It even has the security disclaimer on the side. I report this stupid email every time it comes to me but it's very authentic looking and I'm sure it's really nailing plenty of unsuspecting PayPal users.

No limit to the supply of complete scum in the world.

29. https NOT http

The real PayPal site is https://www.paypal.com

I think the "s" stands for secure

Always make sure you're on the site with https

PayPal can take a long, long time to clear up problems. I once had reason to think somebody had my password, and I asked PayPal what to do. They froze my account and I had to send them a notarized statement and lots of documents, which they then lost, and it was about a year before I could use them again. They finally cleared it up when a PayPal person asked me on the phone, "How much was the amount in dispute?" When I explained that there never was any amount in dispute, just some password paranoia, the account was unfrozen.

I would, however, check out the seller (if you're buying something off e-bay for instance) before sending him/her your credit card information.

18. Credit Card Info
On eBay you don't send the credit card info to the seller. You only give your information to PayPal.

21. It's the best way to pay on e-bay
I only keep around $100 in my PP account at one time (I don't really trust any online site). But, it's easy to use and lots of people on e-bay will ONLY take PP. I've been using it for over a year and have never had any trouble with it or ny e-bay purchases. In fact, I've gotten faster delivery (less than 3-5 days from sale) from most private vendors I've bought from on e-bay than retail dealers.

23. Paypal is great, but one word of caution...
Never click on a link you receive in your email to get to your Paypal account. If you need to login to your Paypal account, always type the Paypal URL in a newly opened browser window.

28. If you use it, be wary of fake e-mails purporting to be from PayPal.
You will get some e-mails that say they are e-mailing from PayPal, and asking for information, or asking you to click on a link in the e-mail and update information.

NEVER NEVER NEVER access PayPal or any site by clicking on a link in an e-mail.

Some fakers have sent tons of such e-mails and obtained credit card information, paypayl accounting information, and the like.

Same think with E-Bay.
