Granny D running for Senate

Granny D emerges as sole challenger to Gregg

By Associated Press, 6/15/2004 08:16

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) It turns out there will be only one Democrat challenging U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg this fall.

Secretary of State Bill Gardner on Monday disqualified former Berlin Mayor Dick Bosa and Kathleen Houston of Concord, saying they are not registered Democrats.

That leaves Doris Haddock, better known as Granny D, to challenge Gregg after state Sen. Burt Cohen dropped out unexpectedly last week.

Haddock, 94, of Dublin, gained national attention five years ago when she walked across country to get attention for campaign finance reform. But she said her Senate campaign will focus on increasing voter turnout.

I just love Granny D!

1. Love her to death, Granny D has fought the good fight for many years
but I guess this means, in reality, that we've totally given up any hope of contesting this senate race. New Hampshire should be much more winnable for any qualified Demorat. This is truly too sad.

2. Surely Granny D
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 11:59 PM by Zan_of_Texas
is as qualified to be Senator from New Hampshire as Ronald Reagan or Arnold Schwartennegger were to be governor of California.

Surely.

In her announcement speech, she promised to serve only one term, but said,

"For those who may doubt my capacity to serve, let me assure them that, while I may struggle for the right word from time to time, I can yet string my words together somewhat better than even our current President. And, while I need glasses for some reading, I can see clearly the difference between a necessary war and an unnecessary war, and the difference between a balanced budget and a deficit. Most importantly, I can read the Constitution and its Bill of Rights very easily and clearly, and, when elected, I will do what so many others in today's Washington have not had the decency to do, and that is to abide by their oath to defend it."

"I am running for the U.S. Senate against a good man, Judd Gregg, who has allowed himself to become an enabler of George Bush and his neo-con scourge now afflicting our nation and the world. I am the angry grandmother of the New Hampshire family, come off my porch to ask young Judd what in the world he is thinking when he supports Bush's military misadventures, supports the transfer of billions of our tax dollars to billionaires, and supports the shipping of our jobs overseas with tax breaks that actually encourage this tragic loss.

"Mr. Greg, I am not running to give you a scare; I am running to win, because I think almost anyone could do a better job than you of representing our American values and our New Hampshire needs, and I am almost anyone."

4. If I lived in New Hampshire I would
a) work for her
b) give her money
c) vote for her

But I live in Mississippi, which is almost worse.....God love her; plain speaking people stand no chance in most places and thats right where she is.

7. grannyD
I would support her on the name alone "grannyD" is awesome.

I do wonder if she could actually serve out a full term if elected (94 is pretty old). I hope the rigors of campaigning are not harsh on her I know that it is hard to get any rest on the campaign trail...
