9/11 panel: New evidence on Iraq-Al-Qaida
http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20040620-050700-2315r

WASHINGTON, June 20 (UPI) -- The commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks has received new information indicating that a senior officer in an elite unit of the security services of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein may have been a member of al-Qaida involved in the planning of the suicide hijackings, panel members said Sunday.

snip...

I was going to put this in LBN, but it's more than 12 hours old. Sorry if this is a dupe. What a freakin' way to start the week!

Have to run out to work now, hope to find this debunked when I get home tonight.

1. It was posted in several places last night. Effect of info obtained
through torture (remember, torture produces info the torturer wants to hear, not necessarily the truth), similar names (the guy's name is very common in ME), or a spy in the system were several of the possibilities listed in DU.
But they are going to milk this for all they can... apparently Putin's didn't fly????

7. Right. Did they get this "new" information from the OSP,...
...the Pentagon-based NeoCon intell unit that reports to Rummy? Is this not the same crap promoted by both Cheney and FratBoy PRIOR to their testimony before the 911 Commission? Another good question is exactly when EXACTLY did the 911 Commision receive this "new" information? Was it before the Cheney/FratBoy tag-team testified to the commission behind closed doors, or after that "stellar" media event took place? If they knew it before they testified, why wasn't it important enough to share with the commission then?

The report I read yesterday indicated that this guy was a Lt.Col. in one of Iraq's militia units. That's NOT a very "senior" rank at all, and those non-elite militia units weren't anywhere close to providing ANY level of security for Saddam.

Sorry, but this is just another desperate ploy on the part of the NeoCons to attempt to revive their noncredibility.

13. Oh Please!
"Shakir is a pretty common name," said terrorism analyst and author Peter Bergen, "and even if the two names refer to the same person, there might be a number of other explanations. Perhaps al-Qaida had penetrated Saddam's security apparatus."

Look, bottom line is that we had no business invading Iraq, bin Laden and Hussein were diametrically opposite and the fundamentalist Al Qaeda and the socialist Ba'athist party were certainly not going to cooperate. Why continue to buy into such absolute nonesense, such desperate grasping at straws?

16. Bush Press Statement:
"I tell you this... Saddam and bin Laden were good friends! And Putin knew about it! And they had breakfast together sometimes, and they had afternoon cocktails with Kim Jong-Il. And Bush is a glorious leader, all hail him.

Dick Cheney was right, Saddam was planning a nuclear strike along with massive biological and chemical attacks on major US cities. The reason these have not been found is because they are invisible.

Bush will win this election by a landslide. John Kerry is not ahead of him in the polls. He is an infidel. He is an infidel and Bush is slaughtering him. We have caused Kerry to concede. The infidel John Kerry has conceded the election already to Bush, all praise him."

-- Bush's new press secretary...

17. CNN just debunked the commissioners Saddam/ Al Qaida link-6/21
According to CNN headline news tonight, the Republican member of the 911 commission was wrong in saying that a senior officer of Saddam's army was an Al Qaida member. CNN said that there was a similarity in their names but that it had been determined that this link is bogus and the connection was a mistaken assumption that had been disproven.
