Questions about Nader....
#1: Has Nader ever been elected to any office in his lifetime? Anything?

#2: What has Nader accomplished in the last 15-20 years. I know he did a lot of good work back in the day, but is there anything recent that he can credit to his own efforts?

2. Most of his recent efforts are indirectly connected to him
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 03:03 PM by jpgray
Through various public advocacy groups he helped start--I'm not sure about any recent actions of any significance that were exclusively his. He has spoken out consistently over the past three years, although such events received almost zero coverage--he wrote many articles as well.

4. I can think of a recent action of his that's of pretty big significance...
Remember that time he ran for President, and managed to hoodwink enough people into thinking the two major candidates were exactly the same? And remember what shape the country was in four years after that? And do you remember how the arrogant little fuck refused to admit that he tipped the scales in the last election? Yeah, I think that was a pretty major recent action...

10. I assumed the question was about positive actions
I have made my negative comments about Nader in enough threads, I think. :)

5. No, sadly
He seems to be just a legend in his own mind.
BUT he proved he can make a difference as he did in Florida.
the man needs to quit and go home.

14. You Want Bush To Win?!?!?!?
That will enthrone the corporate/fundie agenda permanently.
They'd game the system so far between gerrymandering and Diebold that we could never win another election.

18. "Nader was NOT a spoiler in 2000"
but if Kerry isn't careful, Ralph will play spoiler again in 2004.

The overall effect of his presence in the last election helped elect the Chimp.

9. The point of voting for Nader
is to show the right wing how LITTLE we've learned in 4 years.

13. Kerry's terrified of appearing TOO liberal, yes...
because look how many VOTES it gets him. Enough to TIP an election, but not enough to WIN one. The American public, as a general rule, appears to ME to be fairly liberal... they just don't know it as such. Right wing bastards have done a clever job of turning the word liberal into something dirty. A candidate has to take that into consideration, while not abandoning his ideals. Also, 2000 and 2004 aren't even REMOTELY the same. No one (well, not I for one) knew how HORRIBLE Bush would be in office. Anyone that would make that same mistake in 2004 (voting for Nader in a state where 1 vote could make the difference) just hasn't been paying attention for the last 4 years.

PS. Hope that didn't come across as if to say I'd voted Nader in 2000. I was barely 20 and didn't vote because I hadn't been paying attention to politics at ALL yet. But I probably would have pulled the lever for Nader. Now? Certainly NOT. Maybe when so much isn't at stake.

15. Please, Not if you are in a Swing State!
Yes, you probably can "make a difference", just as Nader and the Greens "made a difference" in 2000, by putting Bush* in the White House.

This is not the kind of difference that real progressives would want to make!

Kerry is a lot more liberal than our beloved Big Dog ever was.

Bush is wrecking the country and the world. Throwing another election to
him just to "teach the Democratic Party a lesson" would be reprehensible.

20. The Talibornagains Are A Pretty Big Difference
Think Ashcroft, Scalia, more people like Scalia on the Supreme Court.
Abortion banned.
Gays forced back into the closet, possibly even hunted down and jailed or worse.

> Do you honestly think Kerry has dramatically different masters than Bush?

Yes! No "Left-Behind'ers" for one thing. Among Bush*'s masters are a bunch
of millenialist Fundamentalist Christians. It is NOT A GOOD THING to have
people who think that Armegeddon will be just a file old time (for them) in
possession of the physical means of bringing it about!

I'm sure some of the "smart money" IS behind Kerry now. Bush* is bad for
business, unless it's a business he or Cheney have a hand in. The term
kleptocracy comes to mind. Real capitalists don't like that because they can't
compete. They'd also like a return to the stability, peace, and prosperity
that we enjoyed under the Clinton administration. Who wouldn't?

Clinton is a moderate Democrat, a good bit to the right of Kerry,
who has one of the most liberal voting records in the Senate.
Could it be better? Of course!
But it isn't worth enduring 4 more years of Bush* in the hope we can find someone better in 2008!

12. Ralph was in Little Rock over the weekend.
The local wingnut paper said that 12 people showed up, that included a handful of reporters.

IIRC - Ralph got 6% of the Arkie vote in 2000.

Gore 422,768 46
Nader 13,421  1
