3. Territorial expansion
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 04:41 PM by Jacobin
They recognize that without Saddam or a similarly vile dictator at the helm that Iraq will split in three, one of which pieces will be the Kurdish north.

They are expanding their sphere of influence in the area for oil and security. While I haven't looked at the Likkudnicks biblical map of "Israel" in a while, it was once a good bit larger than it is now, and many want to expand the territory to include what it was like thousands of years ago.

4. The Kurds are their window into Iran
They're concerned about Iran's nuclear program, and need to cooperate with the Kurds to get their hands on relevant intelligence.

7. According to Sy Hersh who broke the story they are
there only to collect intelligence on the Iranians. Among other things the Kurd contrlled area is near several Iranian nuclear installation sites. The Kurds and Iranians have never been ongood terms with Iranians.

8. because they are affraid of Iran
They want to build up an army to fight the Iranians. So we are letting them do that. In a few years we should have a nice civil war in Iraq and Kurdish terrorists to add to the mix.
