Black - Box - Investigators: Coming to a Motel 6 near you soon:
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 12:43 AM by BevHarris
Two full time investigators on a 14-state tour. See below --

Board meeting Monday June 21:

Members of the board for the new nonprofit, Black Box Voting:

President: Linda Franz. Legislative expert. A quiet but very accomplished voting issue activist -- Look her up in Chapter 15 of the Black Box Voting book http://www.blackboxvoting.org/bbv_chapter-15.pdf

Secretary: Joseph Bailey III. Union organizer. Civil rights advocate for over 30 years.

Jim March. Professional lobbyist (gun rights), computer programmer and citizen activist on the voting issue

Thalia Dudley. From the Dudley family, an African American family that began in North Carolina and, for five successive generations, has been fighting for voting rights.

Vickie Karp. Chairperson for the Coalition for Visible Ballots. Spearheaded a billboard campaign for paper ballots in Austin, generating widespread media coverage. A Texas businesswoman and entreprenuer.

Agrippa Williams. Performing artist, renowned for his work keeping black history alive. Played the legendary Paul Robeson in the theatre, travels nationwide in major theatre productions. Multiple citizen awards; Williams once gave up one of his kidneys for a complete stranger, to save his life.

Tonight the board of directors of Black Box Voting voted to hire:

Bev Harris as Executive Director

and

Andy Stephenson as Associate Director.

Stephenson has resigned his candidacy for secretary of state in order to work nationwide to maximize impact on this issue as the clock ticks down. This was a painful loss to the state of Washington, but a gain for the United States as a whole.

Harris and Stephenson (and local citizen activists, like yourself, who are assisting with investigations and providing road maps to local politics) are traveling on investigations, beginning in 48 hours, to:

- Texas
- Ohio
- New Mexico
- California
- Arizona
- Utah
- Wyoming
- Arkansas
- Georgia
- Florida
- Nevada
- North Carolina
- South Carolina

and will pay surprise visits to other states.

Please email Bevharrismail@aol.com if you want to find a way to meet when we're on our way through your state. We may be traveling through Kentucky and Tennessee as well.

Look out. We're nonprofit, we're funded, and we're ready to rock and roll.

Immediate investigation: Kickbacks and conflicts of interest
Next target: August and September primaries, and November election: the Black Box Voting election watch crew. Citizen volunteers will assist in auditing election procedures, reporting problems to the hotline. We aren't yet revealing all of our strategies for this. No reason to give certain people too much time to prepare.

Bev Harris
(newly appointed) Executive Director
Black Box Voting

P.S. I have gifted all of my rights to, and revenues for, the Black Box Voting book to the new nonprofit organization. I have also turned over all monies due from David Allen and Plan Nine Publishing, if they can be collected. That is now up to the board of directors. I'm off to do what I do best: investigation and public awareness of voting integrity issues.

4. Andy is too damn talented.
And I feel much more secure traveling with him -- and his excellent brain.

I am a resident of Washington State, and speaking as a private citizen (not as a representative of BBV) I am devastated that we will not have his integrity and excellent mind in the secretary of state's office.

and don't be too sure about what assumptions are about your county's proclivities. Anything can happen in the next election, and I mean anything.

You are right. I've been in your neck of the woods a half dozen times in the last few months.

And did you know -- Marin County is putting together a dynamite team of election watchers -- perhaps as many as 500?

please let me know if there's anything I can do

and, I would like to have a concise, one-page BBV fact-sheet to distribute at my performances. does something like that exist?

of course, the book and website will be included in my "Resources for Education and Activism" program insert.

19. We are working on a concise fact sheet and also
a concise "White Paper"

We will be using a continuum of materials, from one-sheets to executive summaries to the book, to educate the public.

Our charter is broad enough that we can deal with all election procedures --

voter roll manipulation (i.e. voter purges)
voting machines
absentee voting
redistricting
campaign finance

The key to success, though, is focusing on very specific problems and doing it well. Long term, we are looking at a broad based consumer protection organization for elections. Short term, the kickbacks investigations and the election watching.

25. Bev and Andy
You will be getting an e-mail from Jeff Seemann's Political Director, Doug Graham. Please let this campaign know your schedule and how we can connect.

As you know, Diebold is in Canton, Ohio (Jeff's Congressional District) and he wants to work with you on this issue as much as possible. The day Bev and Jeff first met face-to-face, Jeff had a meeting with Walden O'Dell and asked him for a paper trail. When O'Dell declined, he said that it "was not part of the set standard to have a paper trail". Jeff Seemann then asked him to "not follow the standard, but to set a NEW standard." O'Dell refused.

Jeff Seemann knows how important BBV is and wants to be there for you.

In fact, if you can be here on Friday, John Kerry will be in town. It would be an excellent way to reach a LARGE number of people all at once.

Looking forward to working with you!

P.S. Andy, Jeff says he is saddened by your withdrawal from the campaign, but thinks you made the right decision.

Trust Andy to always do the right thing, wherever it leads him. You have an awesome ability to prioritize what's important and what's even more important. I'm sorry you won't be SoS but you're right ... this is where you need to be. And thank heaven Bev will have you at her back physically from now on.

Bev, if you have a minute (and are comfortable with it) would you be willing to post this on the ballot integrity Yahoo Group? Many of the people you're working with are there as well as other key people.

love,
heda

37. I am sure this was the most excruciating decision he's ever
had to make. Last I heard, he was ahead in the polls, and he just got notified that he'll receive the Backbone Award, which is huge.

But yes. I think on a national level, Andy will have a powerful impact.
