1. He would have done exactly what the Joint Chiefs wanted
and the only thing left of the US would be Seattle.

It would have been nuclear war.

I thank God that Kennedy was in office then, because a lesser man would have just done what the Joint Chiefs told him to.

21. But FIRST...............
he'd have to fly around the country for a while and hide from the big scary men. THEN he'd do what the Joint Chiefs wanted, from a very secure location that is.

Can you imagine??? Wow!!! We would be history, he doesn't understand diplomacy and how it can be far more powerful than guns and bombs. He would have tried a preemptive strike on the USSR or tried to take out Kruschev.

None of us would have survived . . .

11. Having just seen the movie "Thirteen Days" on TV
this weekend (it was about the Cuban missile crisis), I have no doubt that Bush would not have given it the same thought that JFK did. I believe that Bush would have immediately invaded Cuba and more than likely start WWIII.

He's "trigger happy", imo.

12. I have to agree
Bush does not have the depth required for nuanced thinking. He does not comprehend the consequences of his actions, he just likes the actions. Attack now, try to think later.

15. Considering that Bush's thinkers think like criminals,
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 11:39 AM by Cleita
(Bush doesn't think), we would not only have invaded Cuba, but Russia. Let's say that both leaders had enough presence of mind not to use nukes, the Americans would have ended up like Napoleon's army and the Nazis later, because history has taught us that you can't invade Russia and win.

On edit: We would be speaking Russian today if nukes hadn't been used.

19. Thinking critically about this one...
"The Bu*h Doctrine" in all about preemption... I would imagine Dumya would defend himself on this one by saying his administration would have detected the intent to buy missles, and would have invaded cuba before the had the opportunity to have the missles posted on their land.

Of course, the problems this in itself would have caused would probably have created a whole other conflict. Maybe the USSR would have taken that as an act of aggression and dropped one on us. Maybe our allies would have disagreed with a preemptive tactic and not supported us (like now), and we would have lost their support through the rest of the cold war. Who knows.

Would he have done what he did when China knocked the spy plane down and completely backed off like a milque toast?

Or would he have launched nukes?

Depends on what he thought gawd was whispering in his ear that day, since he properly does not trust his own ability to make reasoned decisions.

28. He would have made a lot of blustering speeches in public.

While privately offering to bend over like he did for China.

I find it surprising how many people on this thread believe he would have gone to war. What did he do on 9-11 when threatened by ... a small group of men? He ran. He hid. Yet you seriously think this pussy would have risked his life in a nuclear confrontation?

And how could someone have possibly replied, "whatever the JCS wanted him to do"? The JCS didn't want to go to Iraq. When forced to do so, the JCS wanted to use a much larger force. Every step of the way the JCS fought Bush. Bush has made it clear that he believes he is a better general than anyone in the military.

Perhaps there would've been the debate of the ridiculousness of complaining about it, while at the same time stationing nuclear weapons and various forward deployments in Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and the ROK..

36. At least one thing would be the same. FAULTY INTEL
Bush would have invaded (or at least bombed) Cuba to prevent the missiles from being armed.

What we didn't know until a few years ago was that our intel was wrong; some of the missiles were operational before the crisis ever started. Whoops! I suspect the Russians assumed we knew that and were freaked out by Kennedy acting like he was still holding a lot of cards. (The most effective bluff is a bluff you don't even know you're making.)

I can hear Bush broadcasting from a bunker somewhere saying, "It wasn't just us. Every other country's intelligence service said the missiles weren't operational yet. I have never been prouder of Secretary Rumsfeld."

Bush would not handle it.

His handlers surrounding him would just tell him what to do and say. Kinda like right now with today's policies!
