When Kerry is sworn in in January, what is first thing you want him to do?
What is the first piece of legislation or executive order that you would like to see him address? Lord knows, there are a lot of executive orders of George W Bush he could reverse. Should he just go ahead and get those out of the way and let the Repubs get over it right at the start? What do you think is the most important issue he needs to tackle?

And, won't places like Fox & CNN get around the Fairness Doctrine by finding Alan Colmes clones?

14. No, but the FCC can do it
All they have to do is follow the appropriate administrative procedures and both houses of congress would have to have a 2/3's majority to overturn the rule(s).

Isn't that correct? So is it really that difficult to re-instate the Fairness Doctrine?

43. Absolutely-
The FCC can reinstate all sorts of media regulations- Just as Reagan's FCC Chairman, Mark Fowler, dismantled them.

All that's required is that the APA (Administrative Procedures Act) is followed to the "t." There's plenty of evidence out there to support the Fairness Doctrine within the context of current communications law- and the Supreme Court decision that upheld the Fairness Doctrine- the unanimous (with one justice not voting) Red Lion case is still controlling authority.

It will take time to do notice & comment, put together the necessary reports and go through the various other requirements- but Republican administrations promulgate their rules even where they are clearly contrary to the evidence on record. It's called administrative discretion!

Just because Clinton was too timid to aggressively use the power of the executive doesn't mean that it can't be done.

Considering the Busheviks have performed Trotsky's pereptual Revolution to such perfection, there are SO MANY things that need to be fixed.

Unless Kerry gets a Democratic Congress (and even then there is no guarantee that they will do their duty any better than they have done it since the Bloodless Coup of 2000).

22. Reinstate the post-Watergate reforms and release Reagan documents
One of the thing G.W. Bush did was undo the rule which allowed for release of presidential papers 12 years after the conclusion of an administration. Clinton declassified A LOT during his presidency, while Bush has taken up a policy of secrecy that would make Richard Nixon blush. I say BRING ON THE PAPERS!

24. First, abolish that gag order on family planning clinics
overseas. He should do that one as soon as his butt hits the chair in the Oval Office, like Clinton did 12 years ago.

Then he can start reversing Idiot's other stupid EOs, including the one sealing Reagan and BushI's papers. Those things need to be out, now.

He can try to issue an order reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, but I'm not sure it would pass muster

He needs to appoint a team investigating Bushco's crimes.

He needs to start the process to break up media, oil, banking, insurance, and other monopolies in this country.

Then he can relax for a day's work well done.

48. Clean house
What he does indeed matters. The decisions he make in the first 60days will chart the course for his administration for the remainder of his tenure. On the domestic scene he should call a moratorium on new prison construction; immediately replace all U.S. Attorneys across the country, and bring to a halt all of the wrongful prosecutions that have commenced against trial lawyers, so-called liberal judges; fully fund legal services, head start programs and primary and secondary educational opportunities; once again look at nationalizing health care; restructure the tax regs to make corps. pay their fair share; prepare and promote an economic policy tat will put us back on track to a balanced budget. On the international level he should bring our boys and girls back home; cut funding to regimes that approve of and sanction slavery, govern by means of oppression and intimidation; create a task force whose sole mandate will be to find viable alternative sources of energy.

60. Welcome to DU...
Hey gchcj7. Thanks for showing up. We need more Republicans to argue with around here...

And yes, I would agree with you that there are times when armed conflict is necessary. Unfortunately this isn't one of them; nobody has yet presented any compelling evidence that Iraq was a threat to the US (after all we'd done a rather effective job of trashing his army in the first gulf war, the stories about WMDs didn't exactly pan out and nobody has yet proved of any substantial connection between Saddam and Osama-- despite the best efforts of various Weekly Standard editors). While I support preventing Hitler clones from conquering the earth, Saddam was no Hitler. Oh, and the Iraqi's aren't shooting at us because they're 'bad' but because they don't like being occupied by a foreign power. They were polite, gave us a few months to get our shit together and leave, and when we didn't a lot of them broke out the AK-47s. So, in some total, this is a massive disaster.

Anyway, welcome. Cheers.

It's a simple, no-debate item for him, and it's damn important. A great deal of Bush's favorable coverage has been due to the fact that Powell's son heads the FCC, and the major media outlets have been kissing his ass in order to ensure their own deregulation.

Drop someone competant and useful in that spot. Someone who will be more concerned about the monopolization of all national media than Janet Jackson's nipple ring.

And have it ratified RETROACTIVELY TO INCLUDE 2001.

Create a law against war profiteering.

Eliminate lobbying practices in the USA - and forbid any elected representative to receive any "gifts" from ANY LOBBY GROUP.

77. 1. Declare the entire BushCo cartel to be enemy combatants...
...and terrorists, and decree that they be held in secret prisons until they give us all the information we think they might have. A massive order for lightsticks and dogs will ensue.

2. Once this is done, repeal the Patriot Act.

3. Apologize to the people of Iraq. "We're sorry. We screwed up. We're leaving. Please don't shoot at us while we're packing up. Please let us know if we can be of assistance. Ciao, baby, see you on the coast!"

4. One word: PAR-TEEE!!!

Start by breaking up the media conglomerates and regulating the crap out of the media. Get rid of NCLB. Bring the UN into Iraq and get our troops home. Give us universal healthcare.
