Did the president just refer to ...
... the Iraqi prison as "Abu Gareff"?

Good lord.

1. When???? Yes, he has at least 3 different versions of the pronunciation.
They have played with that on AAR...the day he gave his first weekly speech on Iraq (which was his last, as far as I know) he had the three different, all incorrect, versions.

7. Hell, he can't even pronounce America...
It's 'Murka. This is the land he supposedly "leads". How can we trust anything else he says if he can't even get the name of his own country right?

29. Whatever happened
to those weekly, prime time speeches on Iraq? Is it so bad they can't even spin a little speech for George to give once a week? Or were they so hurt that the networks didn't carry his first speech that they just couldn't continue? It's funny though, because they made such a big deal about the speeches, then he gave only one. Hmmm.

4. Yes, he did.
And he looked so pleased with himself, too!

What an idiot!

"They try to shake our will!"

"They hate us for our freedoms!"

"The world will be safer with a free and safe Iraq!"*

* Well, yeah! Show me a free and safe Iraq, George W.! I just don't see one!

6. Does anyone know the correct way to pronounce it?
i.e., the way the locals would pronounce it?

Is it aboo-grabe (as the U.S. media says it)
or is it aboo-hrai-EEB?

just wondering.

edit> Here's the site to hear pronounciations: http://names.voa.gov/
also this: click on the speaker icon.

http://names.voa.gov/SearchAction.cfm

I went to a site that was linked here on DU that gives pronunciations and you can even click to hear terms currently in the news. Didn't write it down. Can't remember, unfortunately.

It's aboo-grehb, with the "r" sound like the french "r".

Anyone know that site?

13. I heard on some news show ...
from someone whose native language is Arabic, say that it's Aboo Gah-raib, with the "r" starting like a French "r" (back in the throat) and then coming forward and turning into a Scottish (rolled) "r" -- lots of practice required to pronounce it properly.

My favorite Bush pronunciation is "Gah-Rape." Freudian.

12. either?
I think they Murikanize it with aboo-grabe, but it most likely pronounced aboo-(soft gr)- ahh eeb. Aboo-grabe is not that complicated and the resident should be able to at least say that. He gives me so much aboo-grief!

25. I thought I heard him say
Abu Gray-ab...

but the morAn says it differently every time he opens his piehole
what an embarassment

we can tell how concerned he is about this issue by his constant screwups. maybe if he keeps getting asked about it he will eventually learn how to pronounce it correctly.

better yet maybe we should suggest that he spend one hour a day saying it correctly over and over and over again until he gets it right
