After the Handoff, Nothing But More Trouble
Sy Hersh, writing in the New Yorker, isn't optimistic about U.S. chances for success after the handoff. For one thing, the always-opportunistic Israelis are encouraging the Kurds to strike out on their own. This is going to drag Turkey and Iran into it, says Hersh.

The Israelis are adroit with realpolitik because they have to be. Sharon is said to have warned Wolfowitz that the U.S. choices are between failure and humiliating, catastrophic failure. He doesn't see "success" as a possible outcome.

The Islamic resistance - now scattered throughout the entire Middle East - has gone mainstream. We've got to go into damage control mode. If the choice is between failure and humiliating, catastrophic failure, let's go with failure. Yikes! What a mess Bush has made.
