Wolfowitz says American troops could remain in Iraq for years
WASHINGTON - (KRT) - Eight days before U.S. caretakers are scheduled to turn over control of Iraq to an interim government, Pentagon officials told Congress that American soldiers are likely to remain there for years.

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, one of the Bush administration's strongest advocates for the invasion, told the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that it would be inadvisable to set a deadline for the departure of American GIs, who make up the vast majority of a U.N.-sanctioned multinational force.

Wolfowitz also said a continued U.S. presence in Iraq is likely to cost American taxpayers as much as $60 billion through the end of next year, twice what Congress has approved.

"From your description, Mr. Secretary, I don't see an end in sight," observed Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo. "We're stuck."

"We're not stuck, Mr. Skelton," Wolfowitz said.

"Tell us what your measurement is for success," Skelton countered. "People ask me this. I have no answer."

This just pisses me off.....Are we pulling out like Bush said by 2005 or not? Who knows...because obviously they don't either!

1. Send freaking WOLFOWITZ to Iraq and LEAVE him there!
The little prick is RESPONSIBLE for this mess. Get him over there, in UNIFORM.

6. Last time he was there he peed his pants when they
fired rockets at his hotel.

I think he will be pontificating from the comfort of his office in the U. S. from now on, assuring us that the media is simply exaggerating the danger in Iraq, its a perfectly safe place and much progress is being made.

2. Wolfowitz always wanted to get permanent bases there anyway.
So since he never planned to leave, of course we are not "stuck" by his reckoning.

Iraq = Tar Baby
U.S. = Br'er Rabbit

saying that security is IRAQs responsibility??????????????? And yet today we read that Iraq cannot declare martial law, just the USA. Oh, and Iraq cannot buy any weapons except from a US company for the next two years.

5. It wouldn't
surprise me if these policies are being approved by Gonzalez. White House counsel dropped the ball and policy makers are running in circles. Of course we knew long ago the Pentagon wasn't able to make decisions for themselves...

10. The good news is
that ole Gonzalez will never see the Supreme Court now, unless he visits.

8. As follower of Leo Strauss, Wolfy may be just telling a "Noble Lie"
So how can we believe anything this despicable neocon says?

9. No, this was the intention all along
And they can just LIE and say they've "brought the troops back home".

Doesn't matter if there are 200,000 Imperial Troops and Hessians still there.

Not a bit.
