Rumsfeld OK'd harsh treatment

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=676&e=1&u=/usatoday/20040623/ts_usatoday/rumsfeldokdharshtreatment

Bush said al-Qaeda members and their Taliban allies in Afghanistan were not covered by the protections of the Geneva Conventions. But he ordered U.S. armed forces to treat them "humanely" anyway, and to observe Geneva Conventions standards "to the extent appropriate and consistent with military necessity."

The alert set in motion a review that culminated with a Nov. 27, 2002, "action memo" in which Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld approved interrogation techniques that included "removal of clothing" and "inducing stress by use of detainee's fears (e.g. dogs)."

Rumsfeld also approved placing detainees in "stress positions," such as standing for up to 4 hours, though he apparently found this approach unimpressive. Rumsfeld, who works at a stand-up desk, scrawled on the memo, "I stand for 8-10 hours a day. Why is standing limited to four hours? D.R."

Eventually, after military officers raised moral and legal concerns about the techniques and the Pentagon conducted an internal review, Rumsfeld issued revised rules for Guantanamo in April 2003 that omitted the stripping and use of dogs.

1. Hey, Rumsfeld's a real salt of the earth blue collar kind of guy.

When he's not standing up signing torture memos, he's digging ditchs and rustlin' cattle.

2. pretty soon he's gonna start "waterboarding" his employees
Memo to Rumsfeld: there is a difference between an old vampire unable to sit due to hemmarhoids and some poor bastard being handcuffed to a railing all day while wearing a hood.

5. Rummy - aren't you getting paid to stand?
I work 8-10 hour shifts as a waiter. I stand and walk and lift the whole time. BUT I GET PAID.

When do we get to have some grownups in charge again?

11. Standing and moving around for 8 hours is tiring, but doable.
Just standing in place, not allowed to move would be worse...

6. This asshole would get it if he had ever served in the military
he stands and walks for 8 hours a day. Try standing perfectly still in an uncomfortable position for 8 hours at a stretch without a break. Try it yourself for just 10 minutes. no movement. hell even the army classic position of attention is difficult to do for 10 minutes solid.

here's how to try this:

heels together, toes at 45 degree angle apart, knees not locked, arms straight down at sides, hands in a fist but with the thumbsnot crossing the fingers, rather the thumbs are pointing at the knuckle of the first index finger, the thumbs should be facing outwards and be touching the seam of your pants, chin up, face forward. Hold this position without moving for 10 minutes.

Now try it for 8 fucking hours with a gun pointed at you, a vicious attack dog barking at you, naked in front of a smiling woman making fun of you and then tell me to stop fucking griping you god-damned nazi.

8. then whoever was in charge of basic training for his unit
was a joke. A huge part of basic is instilling discipline through D&C and if Rummy went through this he would know that standing in a stress position for 8 hours is most decidedly not pleasant. thanks for the info though, i made teh erroneous assumption this guy was a piece of shit chickenhawk like the rest of them. turns out he's just a piece of shit.

9. he never served in combat, though
If he did, he probably would find it hard to say things like: "Will more people get killed? You bet!"

10. Presumably, you are allowed to "move around" while on-the-job.
Try standing in one place without moving: you'll see that it becomes quite uncomfortable.

The calf muscle acts as a blood pump, assisting the flow of blood back up to the torso during contraction. I wonder if the quadriceps also act similarly?
