How much money would you want to retire on?
I'm accustomed to nice things, I'd say $10 Million would do it for me. I'd be able to have a nice home, have plenty of interest to live off of, and have plenty to donate upon my demise. Yup, $10 Milion sounds good to me.

1. Well living like a Republican is not bad...
It is thinking (or the lack of thinking) like one that is bad.

2. Only 1/2 of one days expense for Bush's oil war.
Then I could buy and sell most people.

3. What's the number on Bushco's war up to?
I'm going to make a wild-ass-guess of $75 million a day.

4. I am aiming for 2 mil

before adjusting for inflation. 5% annualized return is 100K/yr in retirement, more than enough if I don't have a house payment anymore.

Although I certainly wouldn't scoff at having more.

on edit: Thanks to *'s tax cuts, when I die, I will have a little extra to give to the DNC and planned parenthood. Thanks shrub!

5. Retire on $25,000/yr? *lmao* As if!
Even if we double our income at some point, we still have two kids to put through college and a trailer that will eventually need replacing.

I don't think retirement is in the cards for us.

7. How much to retire NOW, or how much at retirement age?
NOW, I'd need at least $5M to quit my job but at retirement age (12 more years) I'll be ready to go and I'll be able to get by on about $1M in my 401k (plus the pension payments that start then).

9. Retire now, or the future, in today's dollars.
Let the question lead you where you want to go. I'm not going to be a post Nazi, just curious.

11. Same answer, then. $1M now or $5M at retirement...
...when I get the additional income from my pension and everything's paid off.

8. I could live off 2-4 mil
that way I get enough interest to live on. Have enough to do what I want to do.

But I'm not accumulating it the way I should be.

12. Enough to maintain my present way of living as long as....
...I have no mortgage, I don't need any major capital expenditures, I have health-care insurance for regular doctor's visits and catastrophic illness coverage. Isn't that what congressmen, federal judges and the administration get? I want the same.

P.S. A million dollars in a Swiss bank account would be nice. Here in Amerika it could earn 2.3% in a CD which would be $23,000 in unearned income. That is taxed higher than ordinary income, unless I'm really wealthy, then I get breaks.

If you are single like I am, over 65 (which I am not yet) living on a fixed income say of $3,333.34 per month ($40,000.00 per year, around 80% of what I now make ), the IRS/FICA/Medicare will take away $9,142.00, private health insurance (company HMO) will cost at least $5675.00 if I could in fact get any, car maintenance/gas, $3,500.00, food another $3,600.00 (try eating for less than $70 a week even when your 65+), household upkeep (utilities, cleaning, maintenance, etc., $7,200.00, geeze, what are we up to now....$29,117.00 and that's only five basic living items, no clothing, no travel, no presents for the grandkids, no pets, no dating...:wtf:

I guess I'm not going to be retiring anytime soon. Oh, if I get really sick and turn my $200,000 paid-off home over to medicare, that place will be taken away from my estate when I die. If I sell it before I retire, put that money into a CD and get sick, I won't qualify for help until that nest egg is gone. Where is the justice for 45 years of working, raising a family, paying taxes and FICA every year and never ever once been a burden on society. Then along comes a neo-con administration and in less than four years, takes all of that security away. Damn right I'm entitled. Fifteen years ago right after Reagan finished his term (1989), the corporation I then had worked for for 12 years, that I had build up a retirement plan with and profit-sharing, etc, decided I had to go and I lost all those retirement benefits. I started my own company up under Bush I, struggled for four years building it up. Then I again prospered through the Clinton years. The Bush victory, the recession, 9-11 and the war build-up and focus by the administration took it's toll. Last year I had to turn it over and close my business. Thank God I was able to continue to work, pay off my bills and am relatively clear now.

Still I'm now 63 and I'll continue to do my part and support myself as long as I am able, but the republicans, the neo-cons and BushCo liars are making this country's situation very scary looking. They don't give a shit for average citizens and quick frankly I am feeling very vulnerable. That's my story, I'm not complaining. I have been blessed, this is a great country, but under Bush and his gang of thieves, it does not look like it will continue to be great, not for the average hard working American.
