Justice O'Connor Honored for Service

WASHINGTON (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was honored Tuesday for being "a tireless volunteer and strong advocate for public service."

O'Connor received the Sen. John Heinz Award for Greatest Public Service by an Elected or Appointed Official at the 2004 Jefferson Awards gala dinner.

The awards are presented annually by the American Institute for Public Service, a national organization honoring individuals for their contributions through public and community service.

In her acceptance speech, O'Connor read from a 19th century poem about an older man who must make a journey on foot. The man comes to a river and begins to build a bridge. When asked why he is toiling, the man replies that he is building the bridge so that the journey might be easier for a youth who may someday pass that way.
