DU is home to a variety of opinions. Greens, liberals, socialists, the occasional communist, blue and yellow dog Democrats - we do not necessarily agree with each other on every point, and in fact some of us do not agree with each other on most issues. But we come here united behind one common idea: George W. Bush has been disastrous for the United States and the world. The last three and a half years have been the worst in recent memory, especially to those not quite old enough to remember the 60s and 70s (and possibly the 80s). We are driven towards each other by a common goal: to get the neocons out of office.
And that is why it is frustrating when the flame wars break out. DU has had its share of Green-baiting for as long as I can remember, and I have either lurked or posted on this site since 2001. The divide over Nader and his impact on the 2000 election will probably never be bridged, and neither will the huge rift caused by his quest for the White House once again. But one shouldn't expect these issues to go away.
What's more surprising (and indeed more frustrating) is the apparent rift over former President Clinton. With the launch of his book, his book tour, and his appearances on countless talk shows, the forty-first President has made it back into the news. There are a great many people here who either like or adore Clinton, and those who are ecstatic over the book and his reemergence. And there are is contingent, not small by any means, that dislikes or hates Clinton. Both sides raise legitimate points. But the flame wars that erupt over the former President seem to be missing the bigger picture.
This man is no longer in charge.
This man is.
It is a far wiser thing to live in the present than dwell on the past.
Peace and love.
