I've never paid any attention to Medved - I read movie reviews by Ebert if I bother to read them at all before seeing a movie.

I'm glad Michael Moore embraced all the negative publicity on the Daily Show last night. I think he is right that it will help the film - up to a point. I live in a small town in Alabama, which gives me, um, access, to more of the people who really NEED to see this movie than I might have if I still lived in DC, as I did a few years ago. I think the jury is still out as to whether all the negative publicity will galvanize this large part of the American population to go see FH 9/11.

That said, I'm going to do all I can to get folks to the theaters in the next few weeks - I'm still an optimist!

...but it is playing 45 miles away, so we are making the trek tonight. If it was playing here, I'd have a lot more folks (fence-sitters) there for opening weekend, but I can only work with the hand I'm dealt!

I hope all of us can take seriously the challenge to take someone to the movie that wouldn't have gone otherwise. I know it is a hell of a lot more convenient and fun to go with like-minded friends, but that doesn't do any more than provide a great night out.

People respond to other people, period. This movie won't change anyone's mind about Bush unless they actually see it. And I think we are kidding ourselves if we think that the average American will be driven to see this film by its publicity, positive or negative. Most fence-sitters (not to mention Republicans) will only go if they are asked by someone they know and trust.

It is easy to be optimistic about swinging folks to our side if you live and work among other activists. I've been there. To us, these issues are so clear. But that isn't the reality that the vast majority of Americans live in. Most are far more concerned about the cost of day care or whether or not they'll ever be able to own their own home (or any number of other things that directly impact them on a daily basis) than national politics. Most can't see the very real connection between the actions of the administration and these daily concerns, because it isn't Bush calling because the rent is late or behind the counter at the gas station.

We have to reach out to those who need this movie, rather than sit back and revel in how superior we all are to the rest of the sheep. Otherwise, that self-congratulation will be cold comfort in November.

He's good at half truths, one of the best i've seen as far as snake propoganda. He has successfuly made all the accusations of giving Saddam weapons into old wives tales (at least among his fans), but only because he isolates it to the topic of strictly "weapons". He overlooks dual use technology and loans. He admits we helped Saddam, but only in context of the threat of Iran, which he likens to us aiding Russia during WWII. But, when Saddam gruesomely gassed the kurds, when congress wanted punitive measures against Iraq and Bush was against it, it was way after the threat of Iran.

Ol' Medved has been unwatchable for years, as far as I'm concerned -- he's exactly one of those junket-going hacks that get paid to come up with exciting snippets like "an exciting roller coaster ride of a movie!" that always seems to get attached to films that require an IQ of about 10 to appreciate. And, if you happen to watch him speaking, he exhibits that kind of breathless, false enthusiasm that you just know is the kind of thing the film backers are paying for.

I find it interesting that, last time I looked today, the Yahoo database of critics reviews pegs the film at around an A- (when I had been expecting it to come in around B- or C+; the user reviews so far have been polarized at C+, with the films fans rating it an A+ and its detractors rating it an F -- pretty much what you'd expect from the film at this point in terms of user reviews, I think).

I'll be seeing the film in a few hours, and I'm hoping it will be good and incendiary. If it isn't, however, I'll be the first one to say the emperor has no clothes, but somehow I don't expect that will be the case.
