just like in the rest of the nation. We in California have worked very hard to try to deal with unwanted domestic animals humanely and with using euthanasia as a very last resort, but the 'should be in jail as a felon' Governor want to reverse the progress we have made in this matter.

9. As a former employee of the animal humane society

I am going to play devil's advocate here for a sec. There are 600,000 strays a year put down in the state of CA. This isn't done to be cruel, it is done because there simply is no place to put 600,000 animals each year. Not enough caring homes, not enough facilities (no one will fit the bill for facilities of that magnitude, and the general attitude is that if we just kept that many animals in cages all the time, then who is beig cruel?), and we cannot set them loose for sanitary reasons (imagine 600,000 animals roaming, getting run over, killing each other, being shot, etc). This is why it is SO IMPORTANT for all pet owners to get their pets fixed, and to do so very early.

I am an animal lover, and the thought of any animal being hurt breaks my heart. But it is due to the irresponsibilty of pet owners that we have the over-crowding problem. If we are going to blame any government for having to put pets down, lets blame them for not putting tax dollars towards sterilization instead of putting dollars towards having to put them down. There simply is no place to keep all these unwated pets!

Educate the public as to the importance of getting their pets fixed. How about more footing the bill for the sterilizations? Killing the animals quicker is NO FUCKING SOLUTION at all! (Akin to killing people to solve a hunger problem!)

I mean, we in California HAVE TOO MANY strays and we have a budget problem.

The change in the law will eliminate the overcrowding so that more strays can be taken in and given some kind of chance to life instead of being killed immediately.

Obviously the best solution is to give more money to shelters so that the killing can be extended, but California is in a money crunch right now--hard choices have to be made.

And unfortunately, making more room or putting animals down are the only options RIGHT NOW. I would like to see more education and responsibility on the part of pet owners. Although I understand it when killing animals that are starving is equated to killing people when they are starving, people can at least be taught skill on how to survive/work/etc. Our animal friends do not have this luxury, so until people learn to be responsible FOR them, what choice do we have? Build multi-million dollar facilities (when we could be building multi-million dollar educational facilities for our homeless people)? Pet owners need to own up.

There is no viable PC answer to this problem, really. It's really either sterilize or put them down. Hmm.

13. In our community, there is a program to catch all feral cats

neuter and immunize them. They are released back into the countryside as they keep the rodent population down and there is plenty for them to survive on. Most of us put out food for them as well. Any kittens caught are socialized and put up for adoption. It's not a perfect solution but it has cut down on the number of animals in the shelter at a time that have to be euthanized.
