For North Carolinians Power Outages have become Common and We Sympathize..
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 12:42 PM by KoKo01
with our fellow North Eastern and Canadian DU'ers.

From Hurricane Fran in 1996, where I was without power in 90's degree heat for ten days with trees down and no way to cook (electric stove), to Hurricane Floyd in 1999 which caused massive environmental harm, wiped out a town and cause people to be without power for weeks, to the Ice Storm of December, 2003 where trees were down, transformers blew up and folkswere without without power for weeks again, this time in the cold trying to heat with a tiny fireplace or kerosene. Folks who had wells didn't have water to flush their toilets because their pumps are powered by electricity. No baths and no toilets.....with massive pine trees down all over your yard and on the highways three times in the last six years has caused some of us to almost feel "post traumatic shock" looking at the pictures of people stranded in this massive power failure in the Northeast and Canada.

We here, sympathize with you all. We wouldn't wish this on anyone......and hope all of you came through alright and keep those cabinets stocked with water, extra food, and emergency cooking equipment. With the Bushistas in power we need to have all the self sustaining ability we can muster to get through. And, with this nutty weather and Bush we will probably have more of this!

I hope DU'ers who have "survival" stories will be posting! It's been pretty quiet from our NE DU'ers but probably because some of you aren't even back online yet.........

Anyway, Congrats to you all.....for getting through this!

1. Yes we do
And don't forget about Huricane Hugo. It was still a full huricane when it hit us in Charlotte, 200 miles from where it came ashore!

2. Yes, Hugo was longer ago....but people were stressed for years after that,
I think folks are going to feel alot of stress from this power outage for a long time. Right now it's kind of like
"we coped and got through it and there's adrenalin flowing........but there are "aftereffects that the Cables probably won't cover."

Not having water like the folks in Cleveland....is no picnic. Just because the lights are on...doesn't mean things are back to normal...and that people haven't had an economic impact.

3. Ohhh......Give this a kick! It's not Southern Bashing...So NoOne Cares?
Try to put a post out in DU/GD to extend an arm of compassion and who the hell cares!

I should have had a more "agressive" subject line.....In the future I will post! F**K you NE Folks.....we are Sitting Here in NC SYMPATHIZING WITH YOU...A**holes! Do You Give a F**ING DAMN?

I bet a wonder dialog would ensue on the thread........where the Lions and Lambs come into communion together to discuss how "Tragedies......Can Go Across Regional Boundaries!"

LOL's...........I tried............No emoticom for "I tried"....unfortunately."

Folks......even some of our DU'er would rather "Fight & Argue" than have compassion for each other........

It's Okay! I've been here long enough just to come back another day............:-(

5. Thanks!
I had power in CT, but I'm from Toronto, and my parents were totally in the dark. apparently, it was pitch blakc and they saw stars for the first time in The Big Smoke.

Yeah, it's a bit sad that people usually tend to get most involved when they're knocking someone down a peg...a part of human nature, maybe...maybe even a part of modern, democratic, individualist, ornery human nature...sometimes it can definitely get out hand, though...

6. Thanks! We are delighted to have our power back on and are using it
sparingly. Blackouts have started rolling through my area. Call me a baby, but I get nauseated at the thought of lighting a candle.

I lived for a time in NC-Winston Salem. Beautiful state.

7. Thank you
I'm in the Toronto area and got power back 9 hours after it went down. I have relatives who didn't have water or power until this morning. The region is still not back to normal and it bothers me that there are big lit neon signs and lit empty buildings while neighborhoods have to endure rolling blackouts.

It also came as a bit of a shock to find out in the midst of this that the Toronto area has a 24 hour water supply which runs out unless replenished through electric pumping. Disturbing to say the least, that the electrical system and our security is that fragile.
